Halo: The Master Chief Collection has just received a big update on Monday. A new game mode called “FloodFight” has been added to Halo 3: ODST. 343 Industries, the developer behind Halo, also announced that the cooperative campaign on Halo 3 and ODST will now support crossplay. Players on PC and Xbox can now play the campaigns together online.

Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach have an existing game mode called ‘Firefight’. A single-player or a co-op team of up to 4 players can play this mode. Firefight mode throws waves of increasingly powerful Covenant enemies at the players to battle and defeat.

Monday’s update to the franchise by Microsoft brings ‘Floodfight’ to the game. A mode where a new type of enemies would spawn for players to take on. The flood wave would spawn in three variants - the infected civilian, the infected ODST, and the infected Elite Major who would don a red armour and energy shields. The beta of this new game mode was tested last year and it is now live with “numerous networking improvements” and bug fixes. Players can distinguish between a regular Covenant enemy wave and a Flood wave by a fog that dynamically fades in when the Flood enemies spawn. The fog disappears when a regular Covenant wave comes in.

Flood enemies will also be occupying vehicles for the first time since Halo 2. Players can also take over and commandeer during missions. The Flood can pilot vehicles and have weapons like turrets in their arsenal. ODSTs can now be infected and resurrected by the Flood as well which can create unique battles with your allies. The game would now have ‘boons’ which will provide players with weapons racks that will come packed with assault rifles or battle rifles. Some maps would have flamethrowers or NPC teammates as boons.

343 Industries has also added UI adjustments and changed Forge and mod tools. Campaign customization is also possible now in Halo 4. New multiplayer medals will now be awarded in Halo 3. New skulls were also added for Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 3: ODST. Check out the full update details on Halo’s blog.

The studio also announced mod support for all games in the Halo Master Chief Collection. 343 Industries stated its plans to deliver various updates throughout 2022. The studio had earlier discontinued seasonal updates to the Master Chief Collection after the release of Season 8: Mythic.
