Five Ways By Which You Can Make PS5 Safer For Kids

PlayStation offers a variety of games that have explicit scenes and violent content. Hence, it becomes even more important to keep it safe for kids who love to play video games. Follow the steps in the article to keep PS safer for kids.

It's almost impossible to keep kids away from video games. Though as a parent we always have a concern that it might contain inappropriate content but stopping them from playing isn't a good idea. It’s an excellent avenue for their imagination and a great way for them to develop certain mental and motor skills.  That’s why they could be attracted to playing video games on the PS5.  Instead, you should establish some protective settings on the PS5 to shield your child and monitor their activities.

1. Create a Child Account

  • Create a child account for your minor and add that account to the PS5. Child Account will restrict the default content restriction based on the age of the account user.
  • Here’s how to set up a child account:
  • Go to Settings (the top-right gear icon) and choose Family and Parental Controls.
  • Select Family Management and log into your PSN account.
  • Add a Family Member page on the PS5 with a QR Code.
  • After you’re logged in, scan the QR code to add a family member using your phone.
  • Choose Set Up Now and select Add a Child.
  • Enter the child’s birthday.
  • Add a Child sub-window on the PSN website.
  • Sony will ask you to pay $0.50 to confirm you’re an adult. You need only pay this once—even for adding subsequent kids—and Sony will credit your PlayStation wallet with the $0.50.
  • Enter an email address and password for the account.

2. Customize Content Restriction Level

  • After creating a child account, don't forget to set the restriction level you want.
  • Follow these steps:
  • Go to Settings, Click on Family and Parental Controls, choose your child’s account from the list, and select Parental Controls.
  • Select the Restriction level and choose a preset from the list.
  • Optional: Customize the preset by adjusting the restriction level for all the other options on the page.
  • Choose Confirm when you’re finished.
  • Set Up Console Restrictions and User Passcodes

A smart kid can bypass your content restrictions by simply creating a new account on the PS5 or can log in to your adult account if there is no passcode set for it.

So, the first thing you should do is set up user passcodes for your PS5 accounts. After that, set up console restrictions, which use a separate passcode from your user passcode. After doing these two things even if your child gets access to your account, they still won’t be able to tinker with the restrictions you’ve set.

3.  Here’s how to set up the console restrictions passcode:

  • Go to Settings then click on Family and Parental Controls and select PS5 Console Restrictions.
  • Enter the default passcode: 0000.
  • Select Change Your Console Restriction Passcode
  • Enter the new password twice.

4. Set Playtime Limits

  • Video game addiction could affect your child negatively, but you can try to restrict it by setting playtime limits on the PS5.
  • Go to Settings click on Family and Parental Controls and choose the account you want to limit from Applicable Users on this PS5.
  • Select Playtime Settings and toggle on Restrict Playtime.
  • Choose whether you want to be simply notified when Playtime Ends or forcefully logged out.
  • After this, Set Duration and Playable Hours. Selecting By Days of the Week from the menu allows you to specify how many hours they can play each day of the week.
  • Select Every Day or the days of the week and choose your hours in Playtime duration. You can also set the Start time and End time.
  • Choose Save on the right-hand side of the page when you’re done.

5. Set a Checkout Password and a Monthly Spending Limit

There are thousands of stories out there of kids spending money on applications and video games with their parents's cards.  Avoid that by setting up spending limits and a checkout password.

Add a checkout password by going to settings then user accounts, then clicking on Account, selecting Payment and Subscription, and clicking on Purchase Setting. Turn on the Require Password at Checkout toggle, and it’ll prompt you to enter your PSN password before making a purchase.

The next thing you want to do is place a spending limit. Here’s how to set a monthly spending limit on your child’s account:

  • Go to Settings and choose Family and Parental Controls.
  • Choose your child’s account from the Applicable Users in This PS5 section.
  • Select Parental Controls and scroll to the bottom to see Monthly Spending Limit.
  • Select Confirm after you’re finished.
  • Open Monthly Spending Limit to reveal the drop-down menu.
