It is no surprise that fans of Call of Duty have been discussing bitterly as the company's latest game Black Ops 6, recently became the latest title to feature an optional purchase for enhanced in-game audio. While most fans welcomed such innovation, others took offence at labelling it a "pay to hear" system. The current hype is around the partnership deal with the spatial audio company Embody.
The Breakdown of Black Ops 6's Audio Upgrade
Moreover, players of Black Ops 6 have the option to use the baseline free audio setting or pay $19.99 for the more customised version of the sound. Embody, through its Immerse Spatial Audio system, has given a baseline profile and has allowed it free to anyone. To enjoy the spatial audio, the gamers merely needed to turn "Enhanced Headphone Mode" in settings on.
For those who want to have a competitive edge, however, Embody offers the Immerse Gamepack for $19.99-which customises an audio profile in conjunction with the individual's physiology. Such premium features will promise clarity and precision up to five years; on average, that is around $4 per year.
While it sounds like a pretty good deal, others within the community have taken issue with the notion that audio gives any semblance of competitive edge. Paying for a higher end sound system has accused Black Ops 6 to lean toward "pay-to-hear," though others claim the effect would not be so pronounced.
The Immerse Gamepack add-on is readily available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation, and PC. PC fans have no proper trouble accessing it. However, the feature can only be useful to players who use headsets. This makes it less appealing in the views of other types of players.

Community Reactions
The community is divided. Some gaming enthusiasts applaud the innovation and claim that $19.99 for five years of improved immersion is a good investment. "It's not pay-to-win, it's just pay to enhance," a player said on Twitter.
Detractors call this bad precedent for monetizing even minutest gameplay elements. "First skins, then sound? Where does it end?" a disgruntled fan asked on Reddit.
Ultimately, this is all up to the players, the better audio experience is optional, and the real importance of this feature lies in its potential to start an open discussion around in-game purchases and the continually shifting notion of fairness in gaming today.
