Overwatch 2: Classic 6v6 Mode and New Experimental 5v5 Modes in 2024

Overwatch 2 is bringing back its classic 6v6 mode along with fresh takes on 5v5 gameplay. Discover new modes like Limit 2 and Kingmaker, plus the return of 2-2-2 format in Season 14!

Overwatch 2 would finally bring back its old school classic 6v6 mode. But do not think that one patch will do it all. Instead, multiple versions of the 6v6 are coming. And that is not all. Developers are messing things up even more by adding different takes on the current 5v5 mode, maybe somewhat regretting the game's current format. Here is the lowdown on the 6v6 and 5v5 experiments, including when you can dive into them.

When Is 6v6 Mode Dropping?

Mark your calendars for the first week of Season 14, starting December 10, 2024. That's when we'll see the much-anticipated return of 6v6, right before the end of 2024!

All New Experimental Modes Coming to Overwatch 2

The OW team has cooked up a handful of unique modes for us to test out! Here's what's coming:

Limit 2 (5v5)

This 5v5 mode has a little flexibility where each team can have up to two heroes per role, inclusive of tanks. However, tanks will be scaled down to open queue levels, so no rampaging tank stacks! Like open queue, you can choose any hero in any role as long as that slot's open.

  •  Release Window: Season 13

Kingmaker (5v5)

Think of it like a power-up version of Limit 2, playing the same game as Limit 2 but with a twist: the solo role player, or odd one out, gets to earn a mystery "bonus." This mode was oriented on rewarding the lone player, creating an interesting twist on the 5v5 dynamic.

• Release Window: Midcycle of Season 13

Min 1, Max 3 (6v6)

This form of 6v6 also requires at least one of each role on each team, and caps all roles to three per team. Expect solo queuing to see a lot of 1 Tank, 3 DPS, and 2 Supports, as much as role preferences are concerned.

Launch Window: First week of Season 14

Classic 2v2v2 (6v6)

That's the old-school 6v6 mode that all the veterans know and remember with love! It's the true 2-2-2: two tanks, two DPS, and two supports. Pure nostalgia, no frills here!

5v5 or 6v6 for the Long Run?

The dev team is going to keep experimenting with these modes until they find the one that best fits Overwatch 2 players. Whether it is the former or the latter, though, we can expect to see some interesting changes that will potentially alter Overwatch 2 gameplay in the not-so-distant future.
