After a decade-long support from Valve, CS: GO is now left on its own.
After the power-packed launch of Counter-Strike 2 last year, Valve has now formally terminated its support to the OG Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. This means players will now receive any further updates for the game.
Launched in 2012, CS: GO served as one of the most engaging games in the history of gaming, but as of Jan 1, 2024, Valve won't be updating the game anymore because the development team is engrossed in Counter-Strike 2. Players will still be able to launch the game via the beta branch in the Steam library.
For a short period players will be able to get the lag-free experience of CS: GO(without multiplayer), however, once Valve starts updating its coordinator, chances are very high that most of the features won't work in CS: GO's current build.
“Certain functionality that relies on compatibility with the Game Coordinator (e.g., access to inventory) may degrade and/or fail,” Valve says in its CS: GO legacy explainer.
After months of intense work by Valve, many game-breaking bugs and issues were fixed in CS2, which was anticipated to launch in September 2023. Despite this, players were still able to switch to CS: GO without any issues in any of the cases. It's unclear how long this path will stay viable, though, as the game's core features will probably break when CS2 is released.
One of the best shooters of all time, CS: GO introduced millions to the first-person shooter genre and produced a generation of competitive players. For its more than ten-year existence, the game developed a devoted and ardent fanbase, much like a good wine. Although a third of the 1,117,517 players that SteamCharts recorded in May 2023 have left the game since its release, the number still holds the top spot.
