Esports and Gaming are witnessing a significant rise in India with the government recognizing it as a multi-sport event. Esports has also debuted as a medal event in the ongoing Asian Games 2023 where the infamous FIFA 23 duo of India Charanjot Singh and Karman Singh Tikka represented the nation in Hangzhou, China.
Before their inaugural appearance at the Asian Games, India Today Gaming had the opportunity to have a conversation with the dynamic FIFA-playing duo. During our conversation, we delved into their unique journeys, the path that led them to qualify for the Asian Games, their forthcoming aspirations, the evolving landscape of esports, their deep-rooted passion for football, and a host of other captivating topics. Here are the excerpts from the interview:
1. Both of you went to Seoul, South Korea How has been your international career till now?
Charanjot: It was a great experience in Seoul as I finished in the first position. But leading up to it, it was quite doubtful as we were worried about the performance against those we hadn't played in the past. Slowly, the confidence built up and I kept on going. I would like to carry a similar approach in the ongoing Asian Games 2023.
Karman: It was my first international experience and playing on such a big stage would definitely help me out while representing the nation at the Asian Games 2023. I finished in the fifth position but I would love to climb up the table.
2. How different is the International playstyle from the Indian playstyle and what playstyle did you both prefer?
Charanjot: I think every player from different countries has their own playstyle, but if keep things India-specific, the playstyle differs from player to player. Hence, there is no generic way that a player adopt while competing. Some players like to go defensive while some play with an aggressive approach, therefore, we don't look at the country, we just look at the player we're competing against.
Karman: If I talk about my play style, I usually go aggressive during the initial stages of the match, sometimes things go positive while sometimes it goes against us. After reading the opponent's play style, I try to play what the situation demands.
3. How has been the support from the Indian government when it comes to Esports?
Charanjot: Esports getting introduced in the Asian Games is a major development. I hope that the Indian government keeps pushing this sector in the right direction so that more and more people are encouraged into Esports. Since Esports has got official recognition, it would be easy for youngsters to convince their parents about this sector's significance.
Karman: I feel the support has been great from the Indian government. It's a big thing that we have been given a chance to represent the nation at the Asian Games 2023. Esports getting recognition in India will surely open up more opportunities for youngsters seeking a career in this field. India holds massive potential and supporting Esports will eventually bring out the country's emerging talents.
4. Have you both prepared any specific strategy for the Asian Games 2023?
Charanjot: I haven't worked on any specific strategy for the Asian Games 2023. I would like to have a similar approach that has been there in previously played tournaments. We both will just try to enjoy the moment while representing my country.
5. Describe your experience with the Godlike Esports.
Charanjot: I have interacted mostly with Godl Amar and Kamaljeet. Kamaljeet also manages operations for the FIFA as well. Whenever I go to the Bootcamp, I meet all the players and content creators associated with the organization. As of now, I haven't had the chance to drive Jonathan's Mustang (smiles).
6. Which esports organization are more interested in joining?
Karman: As of now, I am not a part of any esports organization in the country. But, I would love to be part of either S8UL Esports or Orangutan Esports.
