Gran Turismo, Konami’s eBaseball and more to be part of Olympic Virtual Series next month

It looks like popular racing title Gran Turismo will be part of the Tokyo Olympics this year. In addition to Gran Turismo, four other virtual sporting games will make their way to the Olympics. International Olympic Committee (IOC) shared more information about this move in a new announcement. IOC clarified that these virtual sporting games will be part of a new virtual sporting event called the Olympic Virtual Series. This does not mean an official induction of Gran Turismo into mainstream sports.
IOC shared details regarding the upcoming event stating that it has teamed up with five international sports federations. As part of this team-up, the IOC will host virtual events in games that feature the sports of these five federations. IOC has shared the timeline of the series including all the virtual sports that will be part of the series. Gran Turismo to be part of Virtual Series during the Tokyo Olympics
According to the information available online, the Olympic Virtual Series will start on May 13. This series will go on for more than a month to conclude on June 23. IOC stated that Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FiA) will organize a Gran Turismo tournament as part of the series. Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) will host an event for Zwift to offer virtual running and cycling courses and World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) will organize a competition in Konami’s eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020.
Moving forward, World Sailing is set to host a competition in Virtual Regatta as part of the Olympic Virtual Series. This title offers online sailing and regatta sailing simulation to players. Finally, World Rowing is also set to host a competition, but it did not share any game at the time of writing. The federation is yet to share the details around the World Rowing competition event.
Besides four of the five games and the associated federations, IOC is yet to share the finer details of the Olympic Virtual Series. We are yet to find out the people that can take part in the series, the process of registration, information around prizes, and the proper timeline of these events. To conclude, IOC stated that FIFA, International Basketball Federation, International Tennis Federation, and World Taekwondo have expressed “their excitement” around the future versions of the Olympic Virtual Series.
