Marvel game director says DC's idea to connect movies with its games sounds like a 'nightmare'

'Different universes. And that’s how they should/will stay.'

DC Studios co-chairmen James Gunn and Peter Safran announced their plans for the DC universe recently. Gunn delivered the news on projects from the first chapter titled Gods and Monsters. He once again established that the future DC superhero movies, shows and games will share the same universe. He also added that they’ll look to keep the same actors to play their characters across movies, TV shows and games.

“One of our jobs is to come in and make sure the DCU is connected, in film, television, gaming, and animation,” Gunn said in an official announcement video.

He added, “That the characters are consistent, played by the same actors, and it works within one story.”

Marvel’s Midnight Suns director disagrees with DC's plan

While that sounds great on paper, Marvel’s Midnight Suns game director Jake Solomon disagrees with the idea. He believes that creating a single, shared universe between live-action and gaming will make it difficult to develop the games. He also believes that the use of live-action actors as voice actors for games will hurt the existing video game voice actors.

Firaxis’ Creative Director Solomon took to Twitter to voice his opinion on the news. He tweeted, “This would have been a nightmare for us on Midnight Suns.” He added, “I understand the desire (I think) but movies and games are so, so different. And the pressure this puts on the amazing voice actors in the games space?”

“Different universes. And that’s how they should/will stay,” concluded Solomon.

There haven’t been any plans revealed yet for the video games that DC is planning. However, Gunn said during an in-house DC interview, “It’s not like we’re going to have the Superman movie come out and have this Superman game come out.”

Gunn also said, “It’s more like we’ll have the Superman film come out, then maybe two years later, we have the Supergirl movie coming out. So, what’s the story in between there? Is there a Krypto game that we can play that comes in between them? Something that’s still set in the world with these characters, but is its own thing.”

I don’t see why anyone would anticipate the arrival of a Krypto game if it has to serve as the bridge between a Superman and Supergirl movie. The story might live to serve the plot but there’s a lot more to gaming, especially AAA games that Gunn has overlooked. However, it’s just a mere example from his end and we hope the eventual DC games lineup has us excited.
