Before you even face Mary/Maria, you’ll have to deal with not one, but two Pyramid Heads. These guys will attack James right after the whole Maria situation is resolved. Once you finish them off, James will exit the arena and walk through a long hallway filled with echoes of Mary’s argument with him. Emotional? Sure. But you’ve got more pressing matters ahead.

Into the Final Fight: Facing Mary/Maria

Silent Hill 2 Remake

After a trip up a rust-covered staircase, you’ll reach the top of Lakeview Hotel – but the Otherworld version, of course. Here, reality shifts back to something more "normal," and after a quick convo with Mary/Maria, she transforms into her monstrous self, launching a three-phase boss fight.

Phase One: Floating Horror

The first form of Mary/Maria sees her floating in a rusted-iron bed frame, twisted into a grotesque, airborne creature. Here’s how to tackle this phase:

  • Keep your distance: Use your hunting rifle and target Mary/Maria’s body, not the iron bed frame.
  • Avoid the tendril attack: She’ll try to hit James with a long tendril, but if you stay away, it’s an easy dodge.
  • Watch out for the moth swarm: She’ll send a cloud of moths at you – either dodge at the last second or swing your melee weapon to clear them out.
  • Boss Disappears? She’ll occasionally turn into a swarm of moths and vanish, but just stay patient until she reappears to resume the attack.

Phase Two: Dark Corridor of Doom

After dealing enough damage, Mary/Maria will shift into a spider-like form (similar to Flesh Lips) and break the arena floor. You’ll fall into a dark, looping corridor where things get trickier:

  • Stock up: Take the opportunity to gather scattered ammo and health items.
  • Shotgun’s your friend: When the boss pops up, the shotgun does serious damage up close.
  • Stay on the move: If you stand still, she can drop on you from above, so keep moving!
  • Watch for ceiling sparks: The boss’s location is hinted at by sparks on the ceiling, so use this to anticipate her next attack.

Phase Three: Final Showdown in the Light

After more damage, the ceiling breaks, lighting up the area and setting the stage for the final phase. Now, Mary/Maria is crawling on the ground in her spider cage, and the fight reaches its climax:

  • Keep moving: She’ll rush at James with her metal legs, so stay on the run and shoot her from a distance.
  • Dodge her charge attacks: When she lowers her body, get ready to dodge fast, or you’ll get hit.
  • Dealing with moths again: She’ll summon the moths, sometimes followed by a shriek that disorients James. Recover quickly to dodge her next move.
  • Mix up your weapons: Use the shotgun for close-range shots and the rifle when you’re further away to maximize damage.
  • Finishing the Fight
  • Once you’ve dealt enough damage, Mary/Maria will drop to the ground. Now, all that’s left is to deliver the final blow – either with a melee attack or a bullet – and you’re done!
