Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to be a return to the expansive RPG formula that the franchise has adopted in recent years, following a more streamlined experience with Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Set in Japan’s Sengoku period, Shadows will offer a smaller map than some previous entries like Valhalla, but it will still be comparable to Assassin’s Creed Origins in size.

In an interview with IGN, Creative Director Jonathan Dumont revealed that the game’s scale would be similar to Origins, which offered plenty of activities without feeling as overwhelming as Valhalla. This suggests a vast but more manageable open-world experience, ideal for players who found the larger maps of recent entries too cumbersome.

How Big Is the Map?

The playable area of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is expected to be large but slightly smaller than that of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Valhalla. The map is being compared to Origins, which featured ancient Egypt and struck a balance between exploration and accessibility. This means players can still expect a sprawling environment filled with missions and activities, though not quite as overwhelming as Valhalla.

Estimated Playthrough Length

While Ubisoft hasn’t provided an official estimate of the game’s length, we can infer from its map size and previous games. Assassin’s Creed Origins took around 30 hours to complete the main story and about 85 hours for completionists. Given the similar map size and scope, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will likely offer a comparable playthrough time, with around 30-35 hours for the main storyline and up to 85-90 hours for a more thorough, completionist run.

Fans looking forward to Shadows can expect plenty of exploration, stealth, and combat as they step into the shoes of Naoe, a ninja, or Yasuke, a samurai, making their way through one of Japan's most turbulent historical eras.
