Diablo 4 Faces Twitch Viewership Crisis and Community Backlash Post-Launch
Diablo 4, once a promising title, has seen a staggering 99% drop in Twitch viewership since Season 1, leaving players dissatisfied with its live service model and content offerings. Can the game recover?

Blizzard's post-launch experience with Diablo 4 has been difficult due to a vocal crowd that has voiced its displeasure. Hard statistics showing a staggering 99% decline in Twitch watching since the start of Season 1 undermines any attempt to dismiss this as the work of a vocal minority.
At first, Diablo 4 seemed to have a lot of potential. It broke sales records for Blizzard and received positive reviews, including a five-star rating from Dexerto, which helped it achieve an amazing Metacritic score of 88.
Despite the fact that Diablo 4 can be enjoyed, some players have expressed dissatisfaction with the game's live service model and perceived lack of content, even calling their overall experience a "scam." The game's first seasonal update coincided with several unpopular balance tweaks that have only served to deepen this displeasure.
The reputation of Diablo 4 has suffered significantly, despite the development team's earnest efforts to repair the harm. The game's Twitch viewership, which at the time of writing is hovering slightly below 1,000, demonstrates this drop.
To put this into context, SullyGnome reports that Diablo 4 had an outstanding high viewing on July 20 during the introduction of Season of the Malignant. However, on September 9, this figure dropped precipitously to just 2,783, representing a startling 99% drop in peak viewers.
Similar trends can be seen in the statistics for Diablo 4's average daily viewers, which fell from an average of 114,212 daily viewers to just 1,492 during the same time period—a staggering 99% decline in viewership.
These results are a rare outlier for AAA titles, even if a fall in viewing is to be expected for seasonal games. As an illustration, Baldur's Gate 3, which debuted shortly after Diablo 4, presently claims around 22,000 viewers, whereas Path of Exile, its main rival, has just about 14,000.
These figures show a marked decline in interest in Diablo 4 during a year with many major video game launches. The mood in the game's Subreddit has been noticeably depressing, with many players bemoaning the fact that the game is "dead."
Players openly express their unwillingness to play Diablo 4 again in its second season owing to the game's present situation. After the credits rolled and I realised what I needed to do to continue playing, one user said, "I put the game down and haven't really touched it again."
The introduction of more content is crucial to Diablo 4's capacity to address these retention problems in the future. On October 17, the second seasonal update, Season of Blood, is scheduled to go live. The response to this update will surely give light on the game's future development.
