Grand Theft Hamlet: The GTA Movie You Must Look Forward To

Discover Grand Theft Hamlet, a unique documentary shot entirely in GTA Online. Learn about its Shakespearean twist, SXSW award, and upcoming release on MUBI.

Right? There's a GTA movie finally in production, but don't expect anything like the high-profile Hollywood blockbusters. In this case, it's actually a creative documentary, and it really looks much like Grand Theft Hamlet, with the whole movie taking place inside the world of GTA Online .

What's Grand Theft Hamlet?

Essentially, Grand Theft Hamlet is an interesting mix of Shakespeare and the messiness of the world of Grand Theft Auto. The documentary captures two unemployed actors, Sam and Mark, in their trails while trying to recreate Hamlet within the virtual streets of Los Santos during the 2021 global crisis. Well, from car thefts to shootings, it all goes down in the iconic GTA 5 setting - one of the most unique cinematic experiences you may ever witness.

Shot the entire movie inside GTA Online on a mobile phone camera at those cinematic moments. The documentary, then, does manage to catch beautifully poetic and emotional scenes amidst the thrashings of the world of GTA using intimate close-ups and sweeping landscape shots.

Awards and Streaming Details

Grand Theft Hamlet premiered earlier this year at SXSW, impressive enough and winning a documentary feature jury award. It now goes wider; the rights to distribute have been acquired by the streaming service MUBI. No date yet, but it should be online sometime in early 2025.

This Isn't Your Typical GTA Movie

So while not an "official" GTA film supported by Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Hamlet still remains as interestingly avant-garde: blending gaming culture and classic literature in ways nobody would expect it to be. Watch out for that one-of-a-kind documentary hitting the screens soon!
