Forspoken studio Luminous Productions to merge back with parent company Square Enix

Here are all the latest details on the fold in of Forspoken studio Luminous Productions into Square Enix.

A month after launching Forspoken Luminous Productions has announced that the studio will be merged back with parent company Square Enix. The Forspoken developers announced the news yesterday, on February 28 via a post on Twitter. Square Enix also shared a press release yesterday announcing a reorganization within the studio. Here are all the details of these latest developments around Luminous Productions.

Context

The Square Enix team behind Final Fantasy XV had broken out of the studio to form Luminous Productions back in 2018. Final Fantasy XV was developed on Luminous Engine, and the team aimed to create more products on their in-house engine. Forspoken came to be one such product, and the only one at that.

Luminous Productions Square Enix merger details

The announcement of the studio merger comes shortly after the launch of Forspoken, and one wonders if the game had to play any role behind this. However, Luminous Productions explains- “When we established Luminous Productions in 2018, our vision was to make AAA games that fused technology and artistry to deliver completely new play experiences. Having the chance to do just that has been a dream come true”.

The press release from Square Enix provides further clarity about the fold in. “The merger is part of the Company’s efforts to further bolster the competitive prowess of the Group’s development studios”, reads the press release. It further explains that Luminous Productions, “equipped not only with AAA title development capabilities but also technical expertise in areas such as game engine development.” Combining this advantage with the “vast wealth of intellectual property” that Square Enix possesses, “will further enhance the Group’s ability to develop HD games.”

The merger is currently scheduled for May 1, 2023.

Future of Forspoken and Luminous Productions

Though Luminous Productions seems to be a closed chapter now, the Forspoken studio assures that they will “remain entirely” focused on the game, up until the launch. A patch is scheduled to launch soon, addressing the game’s overall performance, something that has been highly criticized. We can expect to receive an update soon about this patch. Forspoken will also receive a DLC “In Tanta We Trust”, this very summer.
