Netflix Games scoring big : Gears of War adaptations incoming, Cozy Grove makers Spry Fox acquired, and more

Gears of War is coming to screen, very soon- not just with one live-action movie, but with multiple TV series- Netflix has announced. Read on to learn all about the latest updates from Netflix.

The streaming platform, Netflix’s aggressive expansion into the video games sector continues with two new announcements. The first one came on 31st October- Netflix has added a new indie studio to its kitty. The second announcement, however, which dropped only yesterday has got us on our toes- Gears of War will soon be adapted for the screen. Netflix acquires indie devs Spry Fox

On 31st October, Netflix unveiled indie developers Spry Fox to be their sixth in-house game studio. Spry Fox is the fourth studio that Netflix has acquired since the announcement of Netflix Games in 2021. The other three include Oxenfree developers Night School Studios, Next Games, Boss Fight Entertainment. Earlier, Netflix also announced that it was setting up a new studio in Finland. As for Spry Fox, you might be knowing from the critically acclaimed Cozy Grove from last year. It has also developed titles like Triple Town and Alphabear.

The press release, which came from Amir Rahimi, Vice President of Netflix Game Studios, highlighted how the acquisition will add “another beloved genre”, to the “growing variety of Netflix’s games catalog”. Clearly, the unique style of indie games has the attention of Netflix, and we’ll soon get to see more of it from them, in the Netflix Games catalog.  

Gears of War will get multiple adaptations from Netflix

Moving on, yesterday Gears of War was celebrating its 16th anniversary, having launched the first game back in 2006. On the occasion, Netflix announced a partnership with The Coalition. The Coalition is a subsidiary of Xbox Games Studios which took over the Gears of War franchise after Microsoft acquired it. Since then, it has launched four games for Xbox One, and P, including Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. 

As for the franchise being adapted for the screen, it sounds like it’s a long-term project. As per the press release, there will be “a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series”. The announcement also added that more stories might follow, hinting that the adaptations won’t end any time soon. So, if you’re a Gears of War fan, the franchise that redefined TPP shooters, you now have a lot to look forward to.
