Skull and Bones has been delayed (again), and Ubisoft has now cancelled 7 games in the span of 6 months

'Players will be able to discover the beauty of Skull and Bones in the upcoming beta phase.'

Believe it or not, Ubisoft has delayed Skull and Bones again. That’s not all as Ubisoft has also cancelled 3 unannounced projects, making it a total of 7 cancelled games in just 6 months. It’s all going downhill at the moment and those waiting for Skull and Bones would now have to wait longer for the title.

It's Skull and Bones again

Announced at the latest financial call, Skull and Bones will now be released in the company’s next fiscal year which starts on April 1. Skull and Bones was set for a release on March 9 but that’s not the case anymore. Skull and Bones has now officially been delayed six times since its first announcement in 2017.

“We have decided to postpone its [Skull and Bones] release in order to have more time to showcase a much more polished and balanced experience and to build awareness. Skull and Bones will now be released early 2023-24,” said Ubisoft during the financial call.

“Players will be able to discover the beauty of Skull and Bones in the upcoming beta phase. The additional time has already paid off and brought impressive improvements to its quality, which has been confirmed by recent playtests,” said Ubisoft in the press release. Ubisoft said they “believe players will be positively surprised by its evolution.”

Series of delays

Ubisoft’s first announcement for Skull and Bones release was 2018 but there were several delay announcements that followed. Most recently, Ubisoft committed to a November 8, 2022, release date. They even displayed a one-hour gameplay reveal. Then came September and Ubisoft delayed the game to March 9. And now, there’s a broad early 2023-2024 release window announced for Skull and Bones.

Skull and Bones gameplay

Skull and Bones was inspired by Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Amazon Luna and PC, whenever it does release. The game is set in the Indian Ocean during the 17th century and players take on the role of a pirate captain who’s looking to be infamous and in search of glory. Skull and Bones is essentially a survival RPG featuring crafting, resources, looting, pirating, managing crew and other gameplay elements.

Ubisoft cancels 3 unannounced games

Ubisoft said they want to ensure that all of their “energy is focused on building our brands and live services into some of the most powerful within the industry. As a consequence, we have decided to cancel three unannounced projects, on top of the four already announced in July 2022.”
