Everything that happened in Episode 5
Episode 5 traced Henry and Sam’s journey up to the point when they encountered Joel and Ellie. Henry is the most-wanted man in Kansas city with Kathleen, the hunter leader, in pursuit of revenge. He revealed that the people were trying to find him and Sam because it was Henry’s intel to FEDRA that got Kathleen’s brother killed. Kathleen’s brother was the leader of the resistance in Kansas City.
The episode fleshed out Henry and Sam’s story further. Henry had given up information on Kathleen’s brother, Michael, in exchange for medicine for Sam who was suffering from Leukemia.
Henry encountered Joel and Ellie, hoping that they lead them out of the city. Joel’s capability for violence coupled with Henry’s knowledge about a discreet way out of the city almost worked. However, Kathleen shows up and when she was moments away from exacting her revenge on Henry and Sam, out came a horde of infected (yep, that bigger problem she chose to ignore). Kathleen and her radical group were killed by the infected, clickers and a bloater.
Henry, Sam, Joel and Ellie made it out of Kansas but Ellie finds out that Sam got infected. She tried to use her blood to cure Sam but that didn’t quite work out. Sam attacked Ellie but Henry shot his own brother to save Ellie. Henry was overwhelmed by the decision and decided to take his life too.
Consequences of a broken world
It was an episode about multiple relationships, the actions we take for those we love and the consequences that accompany those choices.
Be it Kathleen’s pursuit of justice for her brother Michael, Henry going above and beyond to protect his little brother or Joel pushing himself with every step to protect Ellie, thus fulfilling his promise to Tess.
All these relationships intertwine in this episode and it led to a series of events that has closed several sub-plots while giving Joel and Ellie’s journey a bit more depth going forward.
Kathleen's thirst for vengeance made her overlook the real enemy of humanity whereas Henry's decision to save his brother saw him prioritize one human life over another. With each episode, Joel seems to move away slightly away from feeling Ellie is just cargo and Ellie is trying desperately to retain her childhood innocence in a world that has long been broken.

Now, The Last of Us Episode 6 will see Joel reunite with his brother Tommy. The next episode will bring the show back to its regular timings after episode 5's early release due to Super Bowl. The Last of Us Episode 6 will release on February 19 (Sunday) at 9 pm (ET) / 6 pm (PT) on HBO Max for the US. Viewers in the UK can watch the telecast live on Sky Atlantic on February 20 (Monday) at 2 am GMT.
