Ubisoft will add NFTs to more of its games, despite Ghost Recon Breakpoint shutting down content support

Players will be able to continue using Digits within the game. Here is all the information you need to know about Ubisoft's NFTs and its future in Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and other games.

Ubisoft recently announced that content support for Ghost Recon Breakpoint has officially ended. However, the servers will not be shut down and players can continue to enjoy the game. This information came via an official post from the Twitter handle of Ghost Recon, on April 5. It applies to the NFTs known as Digits, that Ubisoft created and are available on Breakpoint as well. Ubisoft has also announced that it will continue to mint Digits for other games as well in the future, even if not for Breakpoint. Additionally, a new Ghost Recon game is also in development. Here is everything that you need to know.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint will not get new content anymore, but what happens to its NFTs?

A brief background of the NFTs of Ghost Recon Breakpoint

Ghost Recon Breakpoint, was the first game that was made to support Ubisoft’s Digits, when it first launched Quartz in December, 2021. However, since the Ubisoft Quartz project has till date, considered to be in its testing phase, they were claimable, and did not require real cash to purchase. Though the FAQs do mention a provision for Ubisoft or other designers to charge some amount for certain transactions if they wish to sell them on the Marketplace.
Digits were mostly cosmetic items and other collectibles and wearables on Ghost Recon Breakpoint. However, they did not have any impact on gameplay, but owners did receive certain perks that came with their Digits. In case of real money transactions, the question is, if the owners just wasted their money on Digits.

Status of the NFTs after their minting stops on Ghost Recon Breakpoint

The message from the Quartz website is not accessible in India. Gamesindustry.biz however has provided a paraphrase of the screenshot they received of it. According to the report- “The message thanks all Ghost Recon: Breakpoint players who claimed their first Digits -- Ubisoft's term for its NFTs -- adding 'You own a piece of the game and have left your mark in its history.' It is not clear from this message if the NFTs can be transferred to and used on other games. In case it isn’t, players can only use them as cosmetics or continue to exchange them, but only within the game.

What are Ubisoft’s future plans with NFTs?

When Ubisoft first introduced Digits, it was met with a lot of back-lash from its audience. However, later on in January, in an interview conducted by Finder’s Chris Stead, Nicolas Pouard, VP at Ubisoft's Strategic Innovations Lab and Didier Genevois, Ubisoft's Blockchain Technical Director, addressed the matter. It was revealed that Ubisoft had no intentions of backing out from its involvement with NFTs, but was to come up with more services around it in the future instead. They dismissed the reaction of their audience saying that they “just don’t get” what they are doing, since NFTs are a difficult concept to grasp.
Now, with the latest statement from Ubisoft Quartz, mentioning “Stay tuned for more updates with features to the platform and future drops coming with other games.”, the company most definitely has plans of coming up with more games that support Digits.

What other games is Ubisoft coming up with that might support NFTs?

There have been no official announcements regarding this. However, a list of games had leaked from the datamine of NVIDIA GeForce Now service last year, which included four games from Ubisoft- Project Meteor by Ubisoft Sofia, Project Q by Ubisoft, Project OVER by Ubisoft Paris and Project ORLANDO by Ubisoft Ivory Tower. Ubisoft had acted to take down the list soon after it was posted online. Most recently, Kotaku published a report on 6th April, where it revealed that the next mainline entry in the Ghost Recon series, has been in development at Ubisoft Paris (referring to Project Over) since the past one year. Kotaku has confirmed the news from “two sources familiar with its development”, who have informed that the title could arrive as early as fiscal year 2023.
