Discover how AMD's substantial $400 million investment is set to catalyze innovation and drive growth within India's burgeoning semiconductor industry.
In a resounding testament to India's burgeoning technology landscape, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a prominent US-based chip maker, has revealed plans to infuse $400 million in India. AMD has decided to initiate this plan for only five years as of now.
Mark Papermaster, AMD's Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, announced its plan during the most awaited second edition of SemiconIndia 2023, a technology event. The successful event was also graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. This showed how much technology and the future of AMD have a pivotal role in the nation.
A bold expansion plan is at the core of this investment project. The AMD plan includes the construction of a cutting-edge campus in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which will eventually grow to be the company's largest design hub globally. This tactical choice is expected to revitalise India's technological capabilities and strengthen AMD's dedication to innovation.
By the end of 2028, it is anticipated that this historic investment project will have opened the door for the development of almost 3,000 new engineering positions. This surge of technical expertise has the potential to improve AMD's capabilities as well as provide Indian engineers with a competitive edge in the world arena.
AMD's relationship with India began when it first entered the country's market in 2001 and opened its first office there. Since then, the business has prospered, adding more than 6,500 Indian workers to its payroll.
Also, Papermaster gave a statement, "From a handful of employees in 2001 to more than 6,500 employees today, AMD has grown its India footprint based on the strong foundation established by our local leadership and the highly skilled talent pool." He further also added, "By further investing and expanding our presence in Bangalore, we are committed to driving innovation in India to support the India Semiconductor Mission."
AMD has one of the industry’s broadest product portfolios fueled by growth in artificial intelligence, networking, and 6G communications, and our India teams will continue to play a pivotal role in delivering the high-performance and adaptive solutions that support AMD customers worldwide.
AMD's decision to set up its largest R&D design center in India and expansion of the India-AMD partnership has been welcomed by both the ministers of Ministry of Electronics & IT – Ashwini Vaishnaw and Rajeev Chandrasekar. The new center will provide tremendous opportunities for our large pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers.
