Nintendo Switch welcomes aboard the Classic Game Boy Pokemon

  • August 10, 2023 (UPDATED: August 17, 2023 11:37 IST)

While the possibility of returning to those uncomplicated days might elude us, we now have the chance to indulge in a hearty serving of nostalgia as this iconic Gameboy masterpiece finds its way onto the Switch.

Travel back to the late 90s where you picture yourself in your room, cozily settled on your bed, engrossed in the digital game of the Pokemon Trading Card Game on your trusty Gameboy. In that moment, everything feels harmonious and just as it should be.

In fact, a subset of fans has expressed frustration over the absence of such news, going so far as to label August's Pokémon Presents event as "the least impressive one to date." However, as with any subject related to Pokémon, opinions on this matter vary widely, right?

While the arrival of classic Pokémon titles on the Switch is certainly exciting, there has been no official announcement regarding the inclusion of Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, or the highly regarded Pokémon Silver. When compared to both Pokémon Stadium 2 and the Pokémon Trading Card Game, it becomes evident that these iconic titles are the ones that truly resonate with fans' desires.

The recent instalment of Pokemon Presents has given us not just one, but a pair of cherished classics for the Switch, with the added delight of Pokemon Stadium 2 also being available.

Even if you are new to the TCG experience, rest assured that prior experience of the game isn’t a prerequisite. In fact, you might find this digital format more appealing, as it carries a distinctive charm that some argue is absent from the physical TCG.

Offering an expansive collection of hundreds of cards, RPG-inspired gameplay, and engaging battles, the TCG delivers an experience that rivals certain entries in the mainline series. Naturally, to fully relish this cherished fan favourite, players must possess both a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and the requisite Expansion Pack.

Although Nintendo Switch Online has incorporated numerous titles spanning the Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, and Game Boy Advance consoles, it has notably omitted the inclusion of any classic Pokémon games into its lineup.
Nevertheless, the continued expansion of the service to encompass additional timeless titles is a welcome development. It is only a matter of time before these offerings are joined by the cherished Game Boy RPGs, a prospect that enthusiasts eagerly anticipate.
