Pokemon Go players made every attempt to enjoy the Shadow Mewtwo raids on May 27 and 28. They expressed their dissatisfaction, with some even considering quitting the game after losing out on catching a Shadow Mewtwo.
The most serious issue was a bug that stopped players from catching Shadow Mewtwo. Instead of moving to the catch screen as intended, Shadow Mewtwo's health would remain at one HP and not move until the countdown expired. Players were then immediately withdrawn from the raid, as if they had failed, and were forced to try again.
Niantic recognized the problem in a tweet on May 28, stating that they have received multiple reports. They suggested rebooting the app and rejoining the raid to remedy the issue for some players, however, this did not work for everyone.
Another problem occurred when certain players did not earn any XL Rare Candy despite completing the raid many times.
This raised questions about whether the candies were even supposed to be available, prompting some players to believe Niantic had disabled them. One player contacted customer service but received an unhelpful response.
The fact that the raids were limited to local areas irritated gamers even more, especially those who lived in small settlements. According to reports, the player count had dropped due to hundreds of players leaving in protest over the modifications to Remote Raid Passes, which had a severe influence on local raid participation. As a result, several players missed out on the chance to capture Shadow Mewtwo, causing them great disappointment and pushing them to abandon the game.
One player declared their intention to resign after seven years of playing, citing a fruitless two-day search for in-person raids in two small communities. They thought it was a waste of time and that they, like many others who tried to find groups and wait in lobbies, were being unfairly punished. Several more people expressed similar sentiments.
The community was already upset with Niantic's response to the HearUsNiantic movement on May 18, and just as it appeared the business was working to resolve the issue, tempers boiled up once more.
