The Last of Us Episode 4: Who are Kathleen, Henry and Sam?

Another episode of The Last of Us has arrived and with it, the introduction of new characters. We saw the addition of three new characters namely Kathleen, Henry and Sam. While those familiar with the game know Henry and Sam, who is Kathleen in The Last of Us Episode 4 is a question that is puzzling many fans so far.  

Who is Kathleen in The Last of Us?

Joel and Ellie made their way to Kansas in this episode, which served as a bridge for far more intense moments that await fans. The duo were ambushed in Kansas City by the hunters but barely managed to survive. 

While players faced the hunters in the game as well, there was never a leader associated with the group. That’s where Craig Mazin decided to improvise by introducing Kathleen to the world of The Last of Us. 

Kathleen is the leader of this pack and she’s obsessed with finding Henry. She believes that Henry was responsible for the dewho is henry the last of usath of his brother at the hands of FEDRA. 

 

 

 

“[An original character] that Craig came up with was the character of Kathleen, who was the leader of who in the game of these guys were the hunters, and they take a slightly different role here," Neil Druckmann told ScreenRant. 

He added, “Because I love the idea that there aren't just good guys and bad guys. Everybody's trying to survive, everybody's trying to live life to the fullest way they can. But often, the goals are competing with each other, and that's where the interesting things happen.”

Craig Mazin said that his show “didn't have to fulfill a need that the video game had, which was to send NPCs at you.... We didn't want to numb people to [the violence].” 

“So… it was important for us to ask the question, 'Well, why are they enemies? What do they want?' They're not just evil people. From their point of view, this all makes sense, and it's justifiable, and that was an interesting thing to explore," added Mazin. 

Who are Henry and Sam in The Last of Us?

Henry and Sam are both characters from the video game, who are currently on the run. Henry is a survivor who left the Hartford quarantine zone after FEDRA left. He headed in the game to Pittsburgh with his younger brother Sam but soon found themselves being chased by the hunters. 

There are two deviations when it comes to this episode. For starters, the events happening with the hunters took place in Pittsburgh instead of Kansas City in the game.

 

 

The bigger difference would be Sam who will be deaf in the show. The character is being played by deaf actor Keivonn Woodard.

Showrunner Neil Druckmann talked about this change as he told The Washington Post, “One of the changes that we made for the TV show is we made Sam Deaf ... That kind of constraint led to really interesting storytelling decisions that, in some ways, make that sequence more impactful than it is in the game.”
