The recent Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase unveiled a surprising development: two Xbox-exclusive games developed by Obsidian Entertainment, Pentiment and Grounded, are making their way to the Nintendo Switch.
This announcement comes after a period of speculation and concern within the Xbox community, sparked by rumors suggesting that Microsoft might transition to becoming a third-party developer, akin to Sega's shift after the Dreamcast era.
In response to the uproar, Phil Spencer and the Xbox team addressed fan concerns, promising further insights into the company's future via a planned podcast event. Contrary to the rumors, the podcast revealed that the upcoming Xbox console would represent a significant technological advancement. However, it also disclosed an unexpected decision: Microsoft would be bringing four Xbox-exclusive titles to other platforms.
While specific details were not confirmed by Microsoft, leaked information hinted at the games being ported to various platforms. Soon after, Nintendo's confirmation in the Direct showcase solidified the news, revealing that at least two former Xbox exclusives, Pentiment and Grounded, would be making their way to the Nintendo Switch.
During Nintendo's Partner Direct stream, two Xbox exclusives made a surprise appearance. The first one, observed towards the end of the stream in the customary sizzle reel, was Obsidian's adventure role-playing game, Pentiment. Set in 16th-century Bavaria, players assume the role of Andreas Maler, an artist embroiled in a series of peculiar murder mysteries. With an art style reminiscent of manuscripts fused with early prints and woodcuts, players navigate through intricate narratives, making choices that significantly impact their playthroughs.
Pentiment is set to launch on February 22, 2024, while Grounded is scheduled for release on April 16, 2024. Grounded, another notable Xbox game showcased during the event, offers players a sandbox survival experience set in a backyard reminiscent of "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids." Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, players navigate the challenges of being tiny kids amidst a world of menacing bugs, scavenging resources to craft tools and bases for survival. Notably, Grounded gained attention for its innovative "Arachnophobia" accessibility option, allowing players to adjust spider visuals to their comfort level.
While many expected Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fi Rush to feature, the showcase also highlighted classic Rare titles now available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This includes Blast Corps, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, R.C. Pro Am, Snake Rattle 'n' Roll, and the SNES version of Killer Instinct, offering nostalgic gaming experiences for fans.
