Day 1 Preliminaries for the Goldmoney Asian Rapid have just concluded with a roller-coaster start. The seventh leg of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour started on a challenging note for the tour topper, Magnus Carlsen as he lost his first match to Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja. However, at the end of the day, Carlsen managed to recover and stay on the top in the event rankings. Carlsen is currently tied to Grandmasters Vladislav Artemiev, Daniil Dubov, Ding Liren, and Levon Aronian. Let’s check details around other matches that happened on the first-day Preliminaries for Goldmoney Asian Rapid here.

Goldmoney Asian Rapid: Preliminaries Day 1 results out

The chart leaders have scored 3.5 points out of 5 on the first day. After a challenging start, Carlsen recovered with a convincing win over Hou Yifan in the next round. Later, he went to draw with Wesley So while winning his matches with Peter Svidler, and Salem Saleh. Talking about the Indian players in the tournament, Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi and Arjun Erigaisi scored 2.5 points. On the other hand, Grandmaster Adhiban Baskaran and Gukesh D are struggling with 1 point each.

According to the format of the tournament, Quarterfinals for the tournament will cut down the total players to half. This means that only the top 8 of the 16 will make their way to the second round. This means that all four Indian players and the rest are currently fighting for their survival. Other players currently in danger include Grandmasters Alireza Firouzja, Peter Svidler, Saleh Salem, and Hou Yifan. Looking at the rankings, Grandmasters Anish Giri, Wesley So, and Jan-Krzysztof Duda are in the middle with three points each.
