The alterations made to the gameplay systems in Mortal Kombat 1 are expected to have a significant impact on the game's meta compared to other recent editions.
The latest addition to the Mortal Kombat franchise, Mortal Kombat 1, is set to be a game-changer with its emphasis on aerial combat, introduction of new fighters, and timeline reboot. As with any new fighting game in a long-standing franchise, a new meta emerges, and characters that were once considered weak can now dominate online play.
The franchise has been around for decades, and though the strength of characters may vary from game to game, certain fighters tend to be reliable. This trend is common in most fighting game franchises, especially with integral characters. While it's impossible to predict which characters will be strong in Mortal Kombat 1, we can make educated guesses about a few characters' strength during the launch window before the first Kombat Pack.
The upcoming Mortal Combat's information
In the upcoming Mortal Kombat game, it's safe to assume that Sub-Zero and Scorpion will be formidable characters. While they may not always be at the top of the rankings, they have consistently performed well against most of the roster since Mortal Kombat 9. During a recent server test, Sub-Zero proved to be particularly strong as an all-around fighter. These two characters are also flexible, making them good choices for beginners who may find simpler characters easier to handle.
Liu Kang is another reliable all-around fighter in this game, with a variety of combos that work well at different ranges. Kenshi also performed well during the performance test, thanks to his powerful close-range offensive skills. On the other hand, Kitana may struggle in this game. Although she has plenty of aerial moves and ranged options, her close-range abilities are weaker than those of other characters. While zoners like Cetrion can be very powerful in Mortal Kombat 11, strategies for using Kitana effectively may take time to develop, so she may not be a strong choice at the game's launch.
It's easier to predict the abilities of some characters in the upcoming Mortal Kombat game than others. Shang Tsung, who was a well-balanced fighter in Mortal Kombat 11, is likely to bring a similar skill set to this game and remain fair but strong. On the other hand, Johnny Cage may be overpowered due to his new Hype Meter, which allows him to execute special moves in quick succession. Baraka was previously a balanced character in Mortal Kombat 9 and 11, so it's probable that he will be equally balanced here. Meanwhile, Mileena was one of the weakest characters in MK11, so she will probably receive buffs in this game.
The abilities of most other characters are unknown. Kung Lao, Raiden, and Rain have varied greatly from game to game, while Tanya, Li Mei, and Smoke are unpredictable. Smoke's character is undergoing significant changes in Mortal Kombat lore, which could result in major differences in his gameplay.
