Borderlands 4 Launches on Switch 2 October 3 with Cross-Play and New Vault Hunters

  • July 25, 2025 (UPDATED: July 25, 2025 13:26 IST)

Borderlands 4 releases on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3, featuring cross-play, new Vault Hunters, 4K support, and full Unreal Engine 5 optimizations.

During Gamescom, Gearbox did announce that Borderlands 4 is going to be launched on October 3, 2025, and yes, it’s coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on the exact same day as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. For a lot of players, this kind of simultaneous release wasn't expected. They also showed a short video where the visuals looked cleaner and the animation was faster too.

According to what was told, the Switch 2 version will be capable of running at 60 FPS while playing in handheld mode and can reach up to 4K resolution when connected to the dock. That’s mostly due to DLSS 3.5 being used to improve it. Gearbox also confirms that cross-play support will be there from day one, allowing players from different devices to connect.

New Characters, With Powers That Feel Unusual

Four new Vault Hunters are introduced again, as usual, but this time their abilities and personalities feel more experimental. These are the characters listed:

  • Sable can become hidden using stealth technology and moves quietly.

  • Drek controls alien animals that look dangerous

  • Valda, her bullets bounce and hit targets in random directions

  • Moze-2, who has similar traits to the older Moze but now uses stronger mechanical suits

The game is taking place in a new location called Promethex, which is described as a destroyed industrial zone filled with corporations, rebels, and fighting in between. The story continues from the end of Borderlands 3, and now they are trying to make a deeper sense of the multiverse, which was slightly mentioned before in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands but not explained properly at that time.

They Say It’s not just a port, but we’ll see.

Gearbox made statements saying this version is not simply copied and reduced for Switch 2. The game is built with Unreal Engine 5, and there are special adjustments for the console, like dynamic lights, motion vibrations, and responsive triggers. All this is supposed to make the experience richer. Still, how it truly works when the full game is running—this part remains to be tested.

Pre-orders begin starting August 1, and anyone who buys early will get the “Wasteland Pack,” a bonus set that includes special outfit designs and one unique weapon for early use.

With Borderlands 4 aiming to launch on all platforms on the same day, the Switch 2 version could end up being a surprise for many players. But whether it runs perfectly or not, that answer is coming on October 3.
