Funcom has temporarily disabled Steam Family Sharing for Dune Awakening to curb cheating and account abuse.

Funcom have made the choice to disable Steam Family Sharing for Dune Awakening after they seen repeated misuses that was having impact on the game’s fairness. Some players been using shared accounts to avoid bans and just kept playing like nothing happen, even though they had already got punished before. This ended up making big problems inside the systems of the game, especially now when it’s still in early access and the dev team is actively working on building and fixing a lot of stuff. So this step, while sudden, was seen like a needed one to help protect normal players and not let it get worse.

Response Includes Bans and Hotfixes

At the same time as they stopped Family Sharing, Funcom also has pushed several hotfixes meant for handling major exploits. That includes duplication bugs with items and Solaris currency, which gave some players big unfair advantage. A huge part of that fake money already got removed from the servers, and also hundreds of accounts was banned because of this cheating. They also mentioned they’re still investigating things, and more actions might be taken soon if more problems comes out. It basically shows they’re trying hard now to be strict on cheating and abuse.

Legitimate Users Not Forgotten

They also said clearly that they understand not everyone were cheating. Many users was using Steam Family Sharing properly and now can’t play because of this. Funcom apologized for this trouble, but said it’s only temporary and they trying to bring it back. The plan is to restore the feature sometime before the end of 2025, but no solid date has been given yet. So for now, to stop more problems, Family Sharing will stay off.

A Temporary Step Toward Long-Term Fairness

Even if this is not what people wanted, the devs feel it had to be done now before things go more out of hand. Fairness and balance need to come first, they said. People who got affected by this will just need to wait for new updates later when everything’s more ready.
