EDG Simon Discourse Might Be Career Ending: What We Know

  • India Today Gaming
  • April 18, 2025 (UPDATED: April 18, 2025 11:30 IST)

EDward Gaming faces intense public scrutiny as tensions between Simon and his teammates erupt online. From benching to blame, the Valorant Champions 2024 winners are caught in a storm of accusations over work ethic, communication, and team trust.

Edward Gaming (EDG) has found itself at the center of a heated internal conflict, as tensions between former starter Simon and the rest of the team spill into the public eye. What began as a quiet roster shift has turned into a firestorm of accusations, disappointment and broken trust.

Perhaps the champions curse is true, whoever wins the trophy holds their head high, only to get slashed with problems out of nowhere- or perhaps, things reach a boiling point where the dust can’t be swept under the rug anymore; once the pursuit of victory no longer clouds the eye. Regardless, the fallout has snowballed into a question of work ethics, mindset issues as well as direct attacks on communication. Let;s get into it

The Beginning Of It All

According to a reddit post, EDG recently substituted in new player Jieni7 leading to Simon being quietly sidelined– a move that didn’t go unnoticed by fans. Simon had gained widespread attention for his performances during the last Seoul Championship and the sudden change sparked speculation and concern across Chinese social media as well as reddit.

Initially, EDG management addressed the situation in a livestream, attributing the decision to Simon’s lack of work ethic and poor communication with the team. Simon quickly responded, stating he had been working hard and was unsure why such claims were being made.

But things escalated dramatically when four key EDG players — Zmjjkk, Nobody, Smoggy, and Chichoo — took to Sina Weibo (China’s equivalent of X) to air their pov. Their detailed and emotional posts painted a picture of a player who had distanced himself from the team and failed to meet professional expectations.

Teammates Stance

In his post, Zmjjkk directly addressed Simon’s silence during practice and his apparent lack of motivation:

“If you were even a fifth as talkative during practice as you are during live streams, we wouldn’t have wanted you to leave.”

He recalled moments where the team had emotionally supported Simon during poor performances, only to be met with minimal response.

“We once wanted to walk side by side until retirement… but we can’t always rely on coaxing to play matches.”

Nobody added that the club initially chose not to criticize Simon publicly, in hopes he would improve. However, things took a turn for the worse, leading him to make the statement “You didn’t participate in reviews, you didn’t communicate with the coach, and you didn’t even go to the arena. You gave up on yourself, which led to today’s situation.”

He also alleged that Simon had threatened to quit or swap out teammates after games with poor personal performance, which further strained team dynamics.

Smoggy backed these claims, adding that Simon had become reclusive during practice, only showing energy or engagement during public live streams –which caused confusion and distrust among teammates:

“As soon as you go live, you immediately transform into a second form. Isn’t this kind of behavior strange to us?”

Chichoo, known for his consistency and discipline, reinforced that performance is everything in esports:

“Work is not a child's play. If there is no problem, why change people? Don’t we want to win?”

The Bigger Picture

While fans were initially sympathetic toward Simon, the new wave of firsthand statements from the core roster has complicated the narrative. The team seems united in its stance that Simon’s attitude and commitment were the real issues – not favoritism, internal politics, or personal grudges.

Still, the public airing of such grievances raises questions about EDG’s internal culture and crisis management approach. This rare peek behind the curtain shows that even top-tier teams can face deep fractures — especially when individual ambition clashes with team synergy.

As of now, Simon has not issued another response. Whether this marks the end of his time with EDG remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the trust between him and his former teammates has been badly shaken and his career might take heavy crit due to these allegations, even if he stars some of the best util in the pro scene.
