Esports in India Just Leveled Up—Here’s What It Means for Gamers

  • February 10, 2025 (UPDATED: February 10, 2025 18:01 IST)

The real challenge is how India will structure its esports ecosystem, including competitive tournaments, player welfare, and global representation.

In a landmark move, esports has been added to the list of sports eligible for cash incentives for medal winners at world and continental championships. Recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, this decision puts esports on par with traditional sports in India.

This isn’t just symbolic—it means that Indian gamers who win international medals will receive government-backed financial rewards, just like Olympic athletes. But what does this mean for Indian gamers and the esports industry? Let’s break it down.

Why This is a Game-Changer

1. Esports Athletes Will Get Paid for Winning Medals

  • Gamers representing India in official esports tournaments can now earn cash rewards for their victories.
  • This helps reduce financial struggles for competitive players who often rely only on sponsors and prize pools.

2. More Money, Bigger Esports Scene

  • With official recognition, esports teams and organizations will attract more investors, sponsors, and partnerships.
  • More funding means better salaries, training facilities, and structured esports academies for rising talent.

3. Government Support = More Growth

  • This recognition opens doors for government funding, scholarships, and national esports programs.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently talked about making India the number one country globally in content creation and gaming. This recognition is a big step toward that goal.
  • The state governments of Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Gujarat are already promoting gaming and esports through dedicated policies and funding.
  • This opens doors for government-backed esports events, scholarships, and national training programs.

4. Esports is Now a Legit Career

  • Government recognition removes the stigma around gaming as a career. Expect more parental and societal support for gamers, making it easier for young talent to pursue esports professionally.

5. India Could Become a Global Esports Power

  • With esports set to debut in the 2026-27, Olympic Esports Games, India has a real shot at global dominance. This move lays the foundation for structured coaching, national teams, and more international exposure.

Unanswered Questions—What Happens Next?

While this is a huge win for esports, some key questions remain:

1. Who Will Oversee This?

  • Will the Sports Authority of India (SAI) or the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) manage the incentives?
  • What’s the process for claiming these cash rewards?

The Esports Federation of India (ESFI) is not officially mentioned in the government’s cash incentives announcement. However, ESFI has historically been involved in selecting Indian esports teams for international events like the Asian Games. Will it play a role in this initiative?

2. What About Banned Esports Games?

  • Games like PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, and Arena Breakout are banned in India. Will players competing in these games internationally be eligible for cash incentives?

3. Will India Get an Esports Roadmap?

  • Countries like South Korea and China have national esports programs—will India create one?
  • Could this lead to government-backed esports tournaments or leagues?

Esports is No Longer ‘Just a Game’

This landmark decision is a turning point for gaming in India. Esports is now officially a recognized sport with government incentives, pushing it further into the mainstream.

But now, it’s up to the government, players, and organizations to ensure this opportunity is fully utilized. The real challenge is how India will structure its esports ecosystem, including competitive tournaments, player welfare, and global representation.
Is this the moment Indian esports finally takes off?
