Everything We Know About the Next Battlefield Game: Release Date, Gameplay, and More

The next Battlefield game is in development with a return to modern combat, classic classes, and a focus on core gameplay. Expected to release between April 2025 and April 2026, here's what you need to know.

It’s been four years since Battlefield 2042 launched, and while the game eventually found its footing, it had a rocky start. Now, EA is ready for a fresh start, and the next Battlefield is already deep in development.

Though details are still limited, EA has been dropping hints about what’s to come. From a return to traditional classes to a modern setting and an emphasis on core Battlefield gameplay, here’s everything we know about the next installment.

Battlefield Release Date – When’s It Coming?

No exact release date yet, but EA has provided a rough launch window.

The game is targeting a release during Fiscal Year 2026, which means it could drop anytime between April 1, 2025, and April 1, 2026. However, given that it’s still in pre-Alpha and weekly playtests are just beginning, a Q1 2026 release seems most likely.

Fans might get their first real look in 2025, as EA has hinted at community-focused programs that will allow players to test and provide feedback on early versions of the game.

Platforms – Where Will You Be Able to Play?

Since playtesting is happening on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, those platforms are almost certainly where the game will launch.

  • Old-gen consoles (PS4 & Xbox One)? Unlikely.
  • Nintendo Switch? Not happening.
  • Nintendo Switch 2? EA isn’t ruling it out.
  • PS5 Pro? Could see enhanced support.
  • Next-gen consoles? If they arrive within a few years, EA may optimize for them later.

Setting – Where (and When) is Battlefield Headed?

Battlefield is going modern again, leaving behind the historical battles of BF1 and the futuristic chaos of 2042.

  • The game will be set between 2027 and 2030.
  • The campaign will focus on a private military force facing off against NATO.
  • Locations could include Gibraltar, the U.S., and other global hotspots.

This shift brings weapons and technology grounded in today’s military reality, making it more in line with Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 rather than the extremes of past titles.

Who’s Making It? The Studios Behind the Game

EA has four different studios working on Battlefield, each with a distinct role:

  • DICE – Leading multiplayer development.
  • Criterion Games – Assisting with multiplayer and working on single-player content.
  • Motive – Developing the single-player campaign.
  • Ripple Effect – Creating a new Battlefield experience within the game (likely tied to Battlefield 2042’s universe).

With this powerhouse lineup, EA is doubling down on ensuring both multiplayer and single-player experiences are top-tier.

Gameplay – What to Expect

While it’s still early, we’ve got some key details on how the game is shaping up:

  • Goodbye, 128-player chaos – The next Battlefield will focus on 64-player matches with denser, well-designed maps.
  • Specialists are OUT – The controversial 2042 system is gone, and the classic class-based system is returning.
  • More guns, more maps – Expect 45 weapons at launch (twice as many as 2042) and at least 10 multiplayer maps.
  • Destruction overhaul – EA is working on a caliber-based destruction system similar to Rainbow Six Siege.
  • Carry mechanics – Players might be able to pick up and move downed teammates.
  • A functioning scoreboard at launch – Yep, EA confirmed this one.

Expanding Beyond Multiplayer?

Battlefield has always been a multiplayer-first franchise, but EA is looking to broaden its scope.

  • The game will likely have more than just the standard multiplayer experience.
  • EA wants Battlefield to be a platform, similar to how Fortnite offers different modes and experiences.
  • Expect creative tools like Battlefield Portal to make a return.
  • A new Battle Royale or extraction shooter mode isn’t off the table.

EA is taking extra care to ensure the game is stable at launch, learning from 2042’s troubled release.

Final Thoughts – When Will We See More?

With a release likely in late 2025 or early 2026, we still have a long road ahead before we get to play the next Battlefield.

However, EA is committed to making sure this game is everything fans want, bringing back the core Battlefield experience while evolving in exciting new ways.
