Ghost of Yōtei Will Take as Long to Beat as Tsushima: Creative Director Says

Ghost of Yōtei will match Ghost of Tsushima’s length and scope. Here’s why that decision may be smarter than going bigger in the open-world genre.

Sucker Punch's upcoming title, Ghost of Yōtei, has already become talk of the town, not just because it is the successor of highly successful and beloved Ghost of Tsushima, but also for its design decision. While the fans were expecting the Yōtei to be much more detailed, Infact, according to creative director Jason Connell, the game length is going to be more or less the same as that of Tsushima.

In a recent interview given to Gamesradar, Connell mentioned that his team of developers has intentionally chosen to copy the length of the previous title. As per him, in case of Tsushima, it went well with the audience as it struck the right balance between main story, exploration, and side quests, and this is something they don't want to budge. If you don't know, the main story of Ghost of Tsushima was around 25 hours; in case of side content, it could take 45 hours. However, if someone wants to finish the whole game, including main and side quests, it will take approximately 60 hours to finish the entire game, of course, in one go.

This is honestly the right approach. If you take examples around us, we have seen many modern open-world games fall into the trap of being "bigger and longer," but ultimately, it mostly revolves around the same repetitive quests and unfun collectibles. Repetitiveness is the last thing you might want to see in open-world exploration games, right? So, choosing quality over quantity motive it seems. Much like the same formula that made Ghost of Tsushima popular among gamers.

While I personally loved Tsushima’s setting and gameplay loop, I also remember there were some moments where I felt a little bit overwhelmed by side missions that added little to the story, but it was easily ignorable. If Yōtei wants to truly stand out, it needs to go deeper, and it looks like devs are already realizing that.
