Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding Anime Adaptation in the Works!

Hideo Kojima confirms Death Stranding anime alongside live-action film adaptation.

Hideo Kojima is taking Death Stranding way beyond its video game origins. In an interview with Vogue Japan recently, the legendary game designer disclosed that an anime series of Death Stranding is officially in the works. The news arrives in addition to his already confirmed live-action movie, co-produced with acclaimed indie powerhouse A24.

Kojima's plans for the adaptations are evident: instead of recreating the game's narrative, he hopes to reimagine the universe per platform. The anime, still in its nascent stages, can be anticipated to develop fresh facets of the game's dreamlike world—potentially branching off into character histories, side stories, or completely new plotlines.

Renowned for breaking creative barriers, Kojima asserted that his film venture with A24 is not going to be a straight translation. Rather, it's meant to be a proper work of cinema that can exist independently, even hoping to get noticed at prominent festivals such as Cannes and Venice. It's a departure from conventional video game adaptations, which tend to appeal more to enthusiasts of the original games.

No studio has been associated with the anime so far, but Kojama's involvement implies that it would fit his distinctive approach to storytelling. The anime format provides the openness to enhance Death Stranding's visual and thematic richness without the limitations of live-action movie making.

The Death Stranding movie is gaining traction as well, with Day One: A Quiet Place director Michael Sarnoski supposedly being assigned to direct the film. Reprising his role as lead Sam Porter Bridges has been mooted by star Norman Reedus, although no casting announcements have been made.

Kojima's expanding Death Stranding franchise points to a larger goal: building stories that overcome the original medium. With a film and anime both in the works—and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach coming soon—Kojima is constructing his own multimedia storytelling world, with every medium representing its own unique creative perspective.

As hype continues to mount, one thing is clear: Death Stranding is becoming something greater than a game—it's going to be a platform for Kojima's most ambitious narrative to date.
