Borderlands 4 is officially launching on September 12, 2025, with the bold return of one of gaming's favourite looter-shooter franchises. With guarantees of open-world ease, next-generation combat systems, and billions of weapon options, the game promises to be Gearbox Entertainment's most ambitious title to date. But amid all the hype, one question remains burning: how much will it cost?

Record-Breaking Budget Behind the Scenes

At PAX East 2025, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced that Borderlands 4 had the studio's biggest development investment ever. Sources indicate the budget more than doubled the reported $140 million spent on Borderlands 3.

That size, Pitchford asserts, was required to fulfil the game's ambition. But with expenses that high, many are wondering if the retail price will also increase.

Will It Launch at $80?

There is increased speculation that Borderlands 4 might launch at $80, as a follow-up to the trend of AAA games from Nintendo and Microsoft. Although nothing can be said with certainty, Pitchford provided a frank answer: "I don't know what it will be. That's the truth."

The ultimate pricing choice is left to publisher 2K Games, although Pitchford noted that player accessibility is still a major concern for the studio, particularly with the franchise's staggering 87 million units sold worldwide.

Gamers Question the Value Proposition

Not everyone is assured that a more expensive price point is justified. Critics cite recent standouts like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ($50) and Mafia: The Old Country ($60), which presented strong experiences without breaching the upper price cap.

Scepticism is further encouraged by enduring disappointment from Borderlands 3 and the adverse reaction to the 2024 Borderlands movie, which compromised goodwill among faithful fans.

Gearbox's Dedication to Worth

Despite pricing uncertainty, Gearbox is intent on providing a fulfilling return on investment for players. As Pitchford stated, "We want everyone who buys and plays a Gearbox game to feel they got the better end of the bargain."

No matter if the price is $70, $80, or somewhere in between, Borderlands 4 is looking to be a landmark release for both the studio and the genre.
