  • June 03, 2025 (UPDATED: June 03, 2025 21:30 IST)

Leviathan anime debuts July 10 on Netflix with a steampunk twist on World War I.

The new Leviathan anime, based on Scott Westerfeld’s alternate-history novels, will debut worldwide on Netflix on July 10. It is a joint project by Studio Orange and Qubic Pictures, both known for their great visuals and creative animation.

Along with the announcement, a new teaser image was released to show Leviathan's world. The story is set in 1914 just before World War I. A runaway prince meets a girl disguised as a boy. They meet on the Leviathan, a giant airship that is not built but grown using bioengineered technology.

Leviathan Anime Release Date, Creative Team and Musical Talent

The anime (worldwide release on Netflix on July 10) is directed by Christophe Ferreira, who previously worked on Eden. Joe Hisaishi, a famous composer, made an original song for the series. Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnouchi handle the rest of the music. They are known for their work on Ghost in the Shell: SAC\_2045, RWBY: Ice Queendom*, and Suzume. Their music is expected to bring strong emotion and depth to the series.

The anime draws visual inspiration from the original illustrations by Keith Thompson, featured in the novels from 2009 to 2011. Production is managed by Justin Leach and Taiki Sakurai at Qubic Pictures, with animation by Studio Orange. Orange has previously impressed fans with hits like Land of the Lustrous, BEASTARS, Trigun Stampede, and Godzilla Singular Point. The studio is also noted for its CG contributions dating back to 2004’s Aquarion.

Fan Preview at Otakon 2025

Fans will get an early look at the series during Otakon 2025, scheduled for August 2–4 in Washington, D.C. Special guests include producers Justin Leach and Katrina Minett, along with director Christophe Ferreira. The panel will offer behind-the-scenes insight and exclusive previews.

With its unique mix of steampunk aesthetics, character drama, and historical fantasy, Leviathan is shaping up to be one of the summer’s most talked-about anime releases.
