NetherRealm confirms the end of Mortal Kombat 1 DLC while teasing a new game, leaving fans eager for the studio’s next big announcement.
It looks like the road for Mortal Kombat 1's downloadable content has reached the final stop. Developer NetherRealm Studios made it clear recently that there will be no more characters or major add-ons coming to the game. With that, fans are now looking forward — wondering what’s next from the makers of the brutal fighting franchise.
Last Fighter Arrives, End of the DLC Trail
Mortal Kombat 1, which arrived back in September 2023, has kept players busy with a range of DLC drops. From Omni-Man to Peacemaker and Ermac, the game gave fans both surprises and fan-favorite returns. The final fighter added, Takeda Takahashi, wraps up the Kombat Pack, and with it, the game's additional content journey ends.
The studio hasn’t mentioned any more characters or story expansions planned. Maybe a few minor fixes or balance patches could still happen here and there, but nothing big is being cooked anymore, as far as we know.
Ed Boon Drops a Tease
In the usual mysterious fashion, NetherRealm’s creative head Ed Boon went on X (which used to be Twitter) to share a cryptic message. "MK1 was just the beginning. Big things are coming," he posted. That’s all we got — no details, no clear hints, just a promise.
Fans are already theorizing. Some say it could be Injustice 3, considering how NetherRealm has switched between franchises before. Others feel it might be a new Mortal Kombat, or something completely different — maybe even a brand-new IP, which the studio hasn’t done for a long time.
Looking Back, Looking Ahead
Mortal Kombat 1 tried to reboot the franchise with Fire God Liu Kang resetting the timeline. It brought impressive graphics and strong gameplay, though some players didn’t like how monetized or grind-heavy the experience felt. Still, it stood tall as a modern fighting game that aimed to respect the legacy while taking new risks.

Now that all the DLC is out, fans are reflecting. Did it meet expectations? For many, yes. For others, there’s still things that could’ve been better. But no doubt, MK1 left a mark. With DLC support now over, all eyes are on what NetherRealm does next.
