The online banter, the trolling, and the instigation, everything will now be left behind with all of us forced to realise that we are all just humans, and humans make mistakes and mistakes break hearts.
It would come as a shock to many BGMI esports fans if I told you that the names that have been ruling the scene for a while now haven't made it to the finals of the second official event of the year, Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series (BMPS 2025). Well, the second week of the Semifinals, also the last chance for 24 teams to make it to the finals and compete for a prize pool of almost Rs 4 crore, came to an end yesterday, and to fans' disappointment, teams like GodLike Esports and Team Soul didn't make it.
One might argue that they're just teams and players, but the love for sports, in this case, esports, transcends those boundaries of "just a something" for the fans. Just like players, fans also go through a multitude of emotions when their favourite teams don't make it to the big stage, where they can cheer for them, see them in action live, and watch every emotion of their favourite player unfold.
Emotions, Hurt, and Turmoil Before BMPS 2025 Grand Finals
If you have been an avid BGMI esports follower, the images of Jonathan almost in tears in the BMPS 2024 finals would still haunt you. The sheer emotions that flowed through his teary eyes, and how an arena full of GodLike fans was stunned to silence back then.
If you have been a fan and lived through this, you also know the hurt Soul fans have gone through after their team didn't make it to the finals. Keep in mind, this unit had won the BMPS 2023 that took place in Ahmedabad and had then moved to Team Soul from Blind Esports. But Team Soul, with a different lineup, did win BMPS 2022, which had the then newly made lineup on Omega, Akshat, Hector, and Goblin. That was another set of emotions. So, you get the point-- Esports is synonymous with emotions.
But what felt like a personal blow was the elimination of Aaru-led Orangutan Gaming. The team has had a history of making it to the finals of almost every official event, and just falling short of winning it. And this time, they didn't even make it to the finals, after getting just 89 points and finishing in 12th place.
A few days before the final day, Aaru had shared on his story a note that his sister had left for him and the team. His sister and his mother have been seen on multiple LAN events, cheering for him and his teammates. This will also be a sight that will be missed this time around.
The blow of Revenant XSpark, the defending champions from BMPS 2025, not even making it to the semifinals was enough for one set of fans, and now it feels like every fan base is going through the same. The online banter, the trolling, and the instigation, everything will now be left behind with all of us forced to realise that we are all just humans, and humans make mistakes and mistakes break hearts.
The Rise of the Underdog Story?
This year has been deemed the year of the underdog. What we mean by that is that with many of the seasoned teams out of the competition, the Delhi LAN would see multiple teams that had to work extremely hard, fight circumstances, and be at the stage where their idols stand.
So, if you look at the statistics of things, six of the 16 teams that will be competing in the BMPS 2025 Grand Finals are new to the pro circuit or haven't received the kind of limelight they will now. Just like we talk about the era of players in sports, we do the same for esports, and 2025 is called the era of underdogs, with so many of them reaping the fruits of their toil.
The BMPS 2025 grand finals action starts on July 4 and ends on July 6. The LAN is a ticketed event, and the sales for the same already live.
