Warner Bros.’ big attempt at a Smash Bros-style fighter, MultiVersus, is officially shutting down—for the second time.
After a rocky development cycle, multiple relaunches, and even winning awards, the game just couldn’t keep up momentum. Now, it's being taken offline for good.
From Huge Hype to Fading Interest
When MultiVersus first dropped, it was a massive hit, pulling in 153,000 concurrent players on Steam at launch. Even its second release brought back over 100,000 players—a strong comeback by any measure.
But that hype didn’t last. Over time, interest dropped off hard, with the game barely breaking 10,000 players, even during major content updates. By the time Warner Bros. announced the shutdown, the 24-hour peak had fallen to just 648 players.
Ouch.
What Happens Now?
Warner Bros. has confirmed that Season 5 will be the last update, running from February 4, 2025, to May 30, 2025. After that:
- The game goes offline, but players can still access an offline mode.
- Microtransactions are already disabled, meaning you can’t buy Gleamium (the premium currency) anymore.
- You can still use your remaining Gleamium to grab in-game items until the shutdown.
- No word on refunds, so if you spent money, it looks like that’s final.
Want to Keep Playing? Here’s What You Need to Do
If you want to keep your unlocked content, you must log in before May 30, 2025, to create a local save file.
- If you don’t log in before then, you’ll lose access to everything you’ve earned or purchased.
- The game is being removed from all storefronts, so if you don’t already have it downloaded, you won’t be able to get it later.
Online multiplayer won’t work after May 30, but there’s still hope—players can use third-party services like Parsec to trick their systems into thinking they’re playing locally with friends.
A Thank You From the Devs
In their farewell message, the team at Player First Games and Warner Bros. shared their gratitude:
"We want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
Sad to see it go? Or did you see this coming? Either way, make sure to log in before May 30 if you want to keep your content!
