One Piece Elbaph Arc Reveals Shocking Truth About Rocks D Xebec and Davy Jones

The One Piece saga expands with incredible new information, especially concerning the Elbaph arc. What started innocently as a cheerful story with the Straw Hats having a great party with the Giants became threatening when the Holy Knights arrived. The Holy Knights, representing the World Government, continue their tradition and form of attack, disregarding the rules of engagement and their traditional attacks on warriors, and instead, today, we had them attacking children, trying to shove the Giant children into submission by the World Government without justice or culture, just control.

Davy's Comeback and Xebec's Unexpected Past in One Piece

Amid this growing conflict, the manga provides a flashback sequence with King Harald, the inarguably strongest king of Elbaph in ancient times. But much bigger news came in Chapter 1155, which revealed that Rocks D. Xebec was a follower of Davy Jones. Once just a myth, Davy Jones is described as a cursed pirate who is said to lie below the seas and claim anything that sinks, which confirms Davy Jones as existing in the One Piece world.

The pirate game known as the Davy Back Fight is directly linked to Davy Jones. It was the game where pirates would try and take crew members from the opposite crew's ship. This was how Xebec ended up assembling his powerful crew. Knowing this gives us an additional insight into the notoriety of Xebec's crew or Xebec's notoriety within his crew. The added detail also distinguishes the events in which Xebec began using these fights, after he killed an Admiral during the Reverie.

Davy Back Fights are old pirate games in honor of Davy Jones. Davy Back Fights are started only when both crews admit they want to fight, disposing some coins in the sea as a tribute to Davy Jones for the souls of those who dishonor the fight. During a Davy Back Fight, each crew is entitled to one event. After all events are complete, the captain of the crew who has shown supremacy in battle is entitled to declare an individual from the crew that lost or declare the losing crew take its own Jolly Roger. This is known as "Three Articles of Defeat," which states that the only way to recover whatever has been lost in a fight is to fight another Davy Back Fight. 

The member they acquire must immediately swear loyalty, and the crew(s) losing Davy Back Fight can no longer ever fly the Jolly Roger that was taken. There are always tricks involved. Classic rules discourage unfair actions, like purposely running a team out of their punishment.
 
The Foxy Pirates had some notoriety for involving Davy Back Fights in modern times, but Foxy lost to the Straw Hats. While Rocks D. Xebec did not even end, he would easily provide insult to injury by repeated utilization of Davy Back Fights to collect a crew. Xebec evolves to where the individual members of his crew are hired to achieve their goals, contrary to Monkey D. Luffy, who assembles with crew members who share the same dreams with bond. This is a notable distinction from how the two other successful, powerful pirate captains have gathered their crews.

With the emergence of Davy Back Fights back into the fold and ties to the past surfacing, it would appear that Davy Back Fights are significant in their own right. They are certainly a less damaging means of resolving conflicts for pirate crews, rather than full-scale war. A Davy Back Fight may even occur between Shanks and Luffy, which would allow for a face-off between them without the implications of an intense fight that may leave consequences on their relationship as friends. Shanks may even try to bring in another person as Nico Robin or to integrate the Straw Hats into his Crew. Although a Davy Back Fight may not adequately thwart Blackbeard, he could utilize them to bring along persons such as Charlotte Pudding, especially with persons' unique abilities, like reading Poneglyphs. As much as the past legends are coming back into the fold with current events, it truly seems like the final saga of One Piece has begun, and the world appears to be one in which literally anything can happen.
