Overwatch Mobile is officially in development, confirmed in Jason Schreier's book Play Nice. Learn about the project's details, development news, and what this means for Blizzard’s iconic shooter franchise.
Prepare for lift-off, Blizzard fans: Overwatch Mobile is officially in development. This is straight from Jason Schreier's new book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, where he dug deep into Blizzard's highs and lows—and yes, that includes Overwatch!
Blizzard's Rollercoaster Ride
In Play Nice, veteran Bloomberg journalist Schreier spits the tea after interviewing over 300 Blizzard employees-both current and former. He digs up everything from the mass layoffs to the disturbing lawsuits that rocked the company. Even one of Blizzard's biggest games, Overwatch, didn't escape the fray. Recall how Overwatch 2 doused its much-hyped PvE mode back in March? Yeah, something like poor sales had a lot to do with that.
Overwatch Netflix Series? Canceled!
It isn't all roses for the Overwatch franchise, however. According to Schreier's book, the concept of a Netflix series from Overwatch was actually on its way to being produced by the company before they butted heads and Blizzard ended up filing a lawsuit against Netflix for good measure.
Overwatch Mobile: The Silver Lining
But, hey. It's not all bad news. Schreier finally confirmed what we've been speculating on for years: Overwatch Mobile is happening! According to him, Walter Kong, General Manager of Overwatch, will spearhead this project. And there you go, folks; Walter has been leading the charge on content updates for Overwatch 2. These changes are now laid on his shoulders in the exciting new mobile venture.

What We Don't Know (Yet)
There remain more question marks than answers about Overwatch Mobile. We don't know yet when to look for a launch date, nor do we know if this is going to be a straight port of the current game or something absolutely brand new for mobile. We do know Blizzard is no stranger to mobile success, what with Call of Duty Mobile rising to more than $3 billion in revenue and Warzone Mobile exceeding 50 million pre-registrations before its 2024 launch date.
It is uncertain that Overwatch Mobile will come to the same heights as those, but there is much potential. The hero format seems made for mobile, and if some tweaks are done, it can have big potential in mobile gaming.
Can Overwatch Mobile really turn the world upside down? We'll just have to wait and see!
