A new leak suggests Sony is developing a next-generation handheld PlayStation console, powered by AMD and Samsung tech. Here's what we know so far about the rumored 'Jupiter' project and Sony's potential return to portable gaming.
It looks like Sony might be getting ready to step back into the handheld gaming space, according to a new leak that's caught the attention of fans and tech enthusiasts alike. Shared by well-known tech leaker Jukanlosreve on X (formerly Twitter), the information suggests that Sony is currently exploring the development of a new portable PlayStation device, something that hasn't happened on this scale in over a decade.
Sony Reportedly Working on a New Portable PlayStation Console
According to the leak, the project is being referred to internally as “Jupiter,” and it involves a new low-power gaming chip, which would be designed by AMD and built using Samsung Foundry’s advanced SF2P node. While nothing is officially confirmed yet, the deal is still under negotiation between Sony, AMD, and Samsung. The suggestion that mass production could begin after 2028 has stirred speculation about Sony's long-term plans for portable gaming.
For years, Sony has stayed quiet on the handheld front after the PlayStation Vita, which, despite having a dedicated fan base, couldn’t quite stand up to the rising dominance of mobile gaming and Nintendo’s stronghold in the portable market. But the idea of a new handheld returning to the scene feels more relevant than ever, especially at a time when devices like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck are proving there’s still a strong demand for high-quality gaming on the go.
Sony’s Handheld Ambitions May Be Making a Return
Sony, it seems, is ready to challenge Nintendo’s long-standing monopoly in this space. The company has likely realized that with the right hardware and support, a portable PlayStation can still thrive. The first reports about a potential new Sony handheld surfaced last year, and since then, expectations have been building. Industry chatter has hinted that this device might be capable of playing PlayStation 5 games, though possibly at a lower resolution to suit the portable form factor.
While nothing is officially confirmed yet, the fact that Sony is testing new hardware ideas and collaborating with major partners like AMD and Samsung shows that this isn’t just a passing thought. It’s a real possibility that Sony wants to revive its handheld legacy and perhaps finally give Nintendo some serious competition in a market it has long dominated.
For now, it’s all rumors and speculation. But if these reports turn out to be true, the next era of handheld gaming could be on the horizon.
