Resident Evil 5 Gets a New ESRB Rating: What Does It Mean?

RE5 just got a new age rating, and that could mean something is brewing. But before you get too hyped for a remake, let’s break down what’s actually going on.

A New Rating for an Old Game

March 13 marks 16 years since Resident Evil 5 first dropped on PS3 and Xbox 360. Half a year later, it made its way to PC in September 2009. While fans have long speculated about a potential remake, Capcom has yet to confirm anything official.

But recently, the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) published a new age classification for Resident Evil 5, spotted by gaming insider Wario64. It still holds an M (17+) rating, which is expected. However, one odd detail stands out:

The rating only lists Xbox Series X/S as a platform.

 

 

What Does This Mean?

Some fans immediately speculated that Capcom might be working on a native RE5 port for Xbox Series X/S. But before jumping to conclusions, let’s consider the bigger picture.

Since January 2025, the ESRB has also renewed ratings for several older Resident Evil titles, including:

• Resident Evil 6
• Resident Evil 7
• Resident Evil Origins Collection (RE Zero & RE1 HD Remasters)

All of these ratings also only list Xbox Series X/S as their platform.

So, what’s more likely?
The ESRB is simply updating ratings for legacy titles.
It doesn’t necessarily confirm a remake, remaster, or new port.

Does This Rule Out an RE5 Remake?

Not exactly. But if this rating hinted at a full remake, we’d likely see listings for PS5, PC, and other platforms, not just Xbox.

Additionally, leaker Dusk Golem claims that Capcom is currently working on remakes of RE Zero and Code Veronica—so a full-blown Resident Evil 5 remake might not be in the cards just yet.

Final Verdict: Remaster, Remake, or Just an Update?

While it’s possible that Resident Evil 5 could see some kind of return, this ESRB update alone doesn’t confirm anything major. The most likely scenario?

A simple rating refresh or a possible re-release for Xbox Series X/S.

That said, with Capcom staying tight-lipped about future projects, we can still hold out hope that RE5 will get the remake treatment one day—just not right now.
