Sony's Solar-Powered PlayStation Controller Patent Revealed: Longer Battery Life Incoming?

Sony's latest PlayStation patent hints at a solar-powered controller using photovoltaic cells to improve battery life. Could this be the future of gaming tech?

Sony may be working on a new way to improve its PlayStation controllers, as a recently discovered patent suggests that a solar-powered variant could be in development.

The patent we are referring to here was published in March 2025 and describes a PlayStation controller equipped with photovoltaic cells designed to charge via solar energy.

This will potentially extend battery life without relying solely on wired or wireless charging. If this technology makes its way into production, it could be a game-changer for PlayStation, especially when there are frequent demands of players to solve battery drain issues.

Sony's New Controller Can Be Charged Via Solar Energy

Having looked at the patent, we notice a system where solar panels are embedded into the controller’s surface, allowing it to passively charge while in use or when exposed to light.

This could mean longer play sessions without the need to plug in the controller, a significant upgrade for gamers who find mid-game charging interruptions really frustrating.

At the moment, what its efficiency will be remains unclear, but the idea aligns with Sony's constant ongoing efforts to innovate in gaming hardware.

Battery Life: A Longstanding Issue for PlayStation Users

Battery life has long been a concern for PlayStation players, particularly compared to competitors. Microsoft’s Xbox controllers allow users to swap out AA batteries or use rechargeable battery packs, while Nintendo’s Joy-Cons are known for their efficient battery consumption.

If you take the example of Sony’s DualSense, it has been criticized for its relatively short battery life. A solar-powered option could address this issue while also pushing toward a more eco-friendly approach.

This isn’t the first time Sony has explored alternative charging methods. The company has previously patented ideas related to wireless charging docks and even kinetic energy-based controllers.

However, it’s important to note that patents don’t always translate into actual products. That is why, take this information with a pinch of salt.

For now, Sony has not made any official announcements regarding the patent. Whether or not this innovation becomes a reality. If Sony does move forward with this solar-powered controller, the next generation of PlayStation controllers could be more energy-efficient and convenient than ever before.
