Spectre Divide Shutting Down: Why the FPS Backed by Shroud Failed

Spectre Divide, the tactical FPS supported by Shroud, is shutting down just six months after launch. Find out why Mountaintop Studios is closing and what happens next.

It’s game over for Spectre Divide. The tactical FPS, backed by streaming icon Shroud, is officially shutting down just six months after launch. With dwindling player counts and financial struggles, the game’s developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.

A Short-Lived Run

Spectre Divide first launched on September 3, 2024, with a unique twist—letting players control two characters at once. It was an intriguing concept that initially drew in thousands of players. However, despite a strong start, the game struggled to maintain an active player base. Even after the Season 1 update, numbers didn’t rebound as hoped, forcing the developers to make the tough call.

On March 12, 2025, Mountaintop Studios announced the game’s shutdown, citing a lack of sustained success.

Why Is Spectre Divide Shutting Down?

Despite reaching a total of 400,000 players and peaking at 10,000 concurrent users, it simply wasn’t enough to keep things running. According to Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell, the studio couldn't generate enough revenue to cover costs.

Attempts to secure outside funding, find a publisher, or even sell the studio entirely all fell through. With no financial backing left, Mountaintop Studios will officially close at the end of the week.

What Happens Next?

  • Servers will go offline within 30 days
  • Players who spent money after Season 1 launched will receive refunds
  • Mountaintop Studios will cease operations

In the ever-growing list of live-service games that didn’t survive, Spectre Divide now joins titles like PlayStation’s Concord and Ubisoft’s XDefiant, both of which also struggled to maintain player interest.

Shroud’s Involvement

Shroud was heavily involved in promoting Spectre Divide at launch, but as the game’s struggles became apparent, he distanced himself. Reports suggest that even he grew frustrated with the game at times, publicly rage quitting during matches.

For now, he hasn’t commented on the shutdown, but if he does, we’ll keep you updated.
