Take-Two Interactive Shuts Down Mod That Let Players Explore GTA 6’s Map in GTA 5

Take-Two Interactive removes GTA 6 map mod 'Project Vice' from GTA 5. Fans react as modder Dark Space complies after copyright takedown. Here’s what happened.

Take-Two Interactive has once again cracked down on the GTA modding community, this time targeting a Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) mod that attempted to recreate the unreleased map of GTA 6.

Once again, the move has sparked discussions about modding rights, intellectual property, and just how much creative freedom fans should have when it comes to Rockstar’s games.

The mod in question, Project Vice, was developed by well-known modder and YouTuber Dark Space. Using a mix of leaked GTA 6 footage, official trailers, and community-generated mapping projects. Basically, he attempted to build a playable version of GTA 6’s world inside GTA 5.

The mod quickly gained popularity as curious fans flocked to experience a taste of GTA 6 before its release. Given the immense hype surrounding Rockstar’s upcoming title, it’s no surprise that this project attracted attention, but that also meant it landed on Take-Two’s radar.

GTA 6 mod legally removed by Take-Two Interactive

On March 23, 2025, Dark Space took to Twitter to share that Take-Two had issued a copyright claim, leading to the removal of his YouTube video showcasing Project Vice. Surprisingly, he wasn’t contacted directly before the takedown.

Not to escalate it further, he proactively removed all download links for the mod to avoid further action from Take-Two. You can see what Dark Space has to say regarding this.

Let me tell you that this is not the first time Take-Two has taken legal action against modders. In January 2025, a project aiming to recreate Liberty City within GTA 5 was similarly shut down and discussed with Rockstar Games.

Prior to that, the "Liberty City Preservation Project" also faced legal challenges, reinforcing Take-Two’s consistent policy of limiting modifications that replicate its proprietary game content.

This takedown has the gaming community divided. Some believe Project Vice’s accuracy in recreating GTA 6’s map spoiled Rockstar’s plans for revealing the game’s world. Others see this as Take-Two’s usual no-nonsense approach to modding, especially when it involves their flagship franchise.

Take-Two’s takedown of the GTA 6 map mod has once again placed the spotlight on the complex relationship between publishers and the modding scene that is not going to ease down. Leaving both sides in a delicate dance between innovation and legal enforcement.
It has already been more than a year since GTA 6 was officially announced via a trailer. Since then, the Trailer has garnered around 250 million views, making it the highest-watched gaming trailer of all time.
