Take-Two Shuts Down Fan-Made GTA 6 Map in GTA 5

Take-Two shuts down a fan-made GTA 6 map in GTA 5, citing copyright issues and protecting its release.

GTA fan Dark Space created and shared a playable recreation of the GTA 6 map inside GTA 5, generating excitement among fans. However, the project was quickly shut down after Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games’ parent company, issued a copyright strike against him. Dark Space built the mod using GTA 6’s official trailer and leaks, making it available for free on FiveM. He also uploaded gameplay videos to YouTube, where the mod gained widespread attention. However, YouTube later removed his content due to Take-Two’s copyright claim, leading to his first copyright strike . After receiving the copyright strike, Dark Space posted a video explaining that multiple violations could lead to his YouTube channel being deleted. To avoid further issues, he removed the mod’s download link on his own, even though Take-Two never directly asked him to.

"I decided to take it down before they officially reached out," he said. "To be cautious, I won’t include any GTA footage in this video."

He believes the mod’s accuracy may have been the reason for its removal, as Take-Two likely saw a playable GTA 6 map as a possible threat to the official game’s release.

Industry Experts Weigh In on Take-Two’s Stance

Take-Two has a long history of enforcing copyright policies on fan-made content. Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij called these takedowns "entirely predictable."

“They will remove mods that interfere with their business interests,” Vermeij said in January. He pointed to past cases like a GTA 4 graphics mod that competed with the official Definitive Edition and a Liberty City project in GTA 5’s engine, which could have conflicted with future Rockstar plans.

GTA 6 Release and Fan Anticipation

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch in Fall 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. While Rockstar has not provided a release date for a PC version, it is expected to arrive at a later stage, following the pattern of previous titles. With excitement for GTA 6 growing, Take-Two is strictly controlling pre-release content to protect the game’s official reveal and gameplay experience.
