Smells Like Green Spirit gets film version with added scenes, releasing June 27.
The live-action series Smells Like Green Spirit, adapted from Saburō Nagai’s manga of the same name, is returning to screens in a new format. The staff behind the show have confirmed that a compilation film version will hit theaters on June 27. Along with a new trailer, it was revealed that the movie will include additional scenes not shown in the original TV broadcast.
The drama series originally premiered on September 19. Ikuko Sawada, who directed the series, and Yūka Arai, who wrote the script, will both return for the compilation film. Actor Towa Araki reprises his lead role as Futoshi Mishima, with Shunta Sono playing Makoto Kirino and Kodai Fujimoto portraying Tarō Yumeno. The cast remains the same as in the televised version, ensuring continuity for viewers familiar with the story.
A Quiet Town, a Complex Life
Smells Like Green Spirit is set in a small, sleepy town during Japan’s Heisei era. The story follows Futoshi Mishima, a teenager who has long been the target of bullying for his appearance and mannerisms. To find peace and comfort, he secretly cross-dresses and wears lipstick. Mishima’s life takes an unexpected turn when he sees one of his main bullies, Kirino, holding a lipstick that he had lost. Mishima later catches Kirino on the school rooftop, trying to apply the lipstick himself, sparking a complicated connection between the two.

The original manga was serialized in Comic Be from 2011 to 2012 and compiled into two volumes titled Side:A and Side:B. Nagai also created a five-volume spinoff manga, Shintan Kairō, which further explored similar themes. In 2013, SuBLime published another of Nagai’s works, Boys, Be Ambitious! in English.
Anticipation Builds for Theatrical Release
With its layered storytelling and focus on identity, Smells Like Green Spirit has resonated with many readers and viewers.
