This Shocking 50% Stat Proves Anime’s Streaming Domination: Here’s All You Need To Know

Top OTT platform reveals that 50% of its global subscribers regularly watch anime content.

Netflix is now reporting that more than 50% of its worldwide users are streaming anime, and they aren't slowing down. That was stated during its presentation at the Anime Expo in Los Angeles. They also presented new titles, trailers, and told us how large anime has become on the platform.

Currently, over 150 million homes, or roughly 300 million individuals, view anime on Netflix. That number has doubled over the past five years. In 2024, anime has been streamed more than one billion times. Moreover, 33 anime shows were included in Netflix's Global Top 10 (Non-English) titles, more than double what they had in 2021. Netflix also reported that 80–90% of the audience prefers to watch anime with dubbed audio. So they now offer dubs and audio descriptions in as many as 33 languages to cater to demand.

Among its releases next month, the highest rated is Sakamoto Days. The show is about a retired assassin trying to lead a quiet life, but action keeps finding him. It already topped Netflix's Global Top 10 for 10 weeks and was viewed in 54 countries. More new episodes will be available on July 14.

Another that created a buzz is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. It is the sequel to the cyberpunk anime from Studio Trigger in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Netflix revealed the initial teaser and new art at the Anime Expo event.

The anime list does not stop there. Landing on July 24, My Melody & Kuromi will have a stop-motion series where Sanrio characters are required to save their home country, Maryland. It's cute, but it had an adventure feel as well.

Also teased are Record of Ragnarok III, the final season of Beastars, and the upcoming romcom anime The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity. Netflix mentioned that anime now has all types—from action like Spy x Family and Jujutsu Kaisen to sci-fi like Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance, fantasy like Delicious in Dungeon, and sweet slice-of-life ones like My Happy Marriage and Pokémon Concierge.

With the fans growing from diverse sources, Netflix announced that it will keep on adding more anime for diverse types of audiences and more languages as well.
