Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection's PC release does not change PS5 being the primary platform, claims Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog also spoke highly of Iron Galaxy, the studio which has helped Naughty Dog bring Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PC.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection was finally released on PC yesterday. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection features two games from the series: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Naughty Dog has revealed how their journey has been while bringing the PlayStation series to PC and gave an insight into the future of the studio.

PS5 will still be Naughty Dog's primary platform

Naughty Dog vice president Christian Gyrling penned down his take on the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on the PlayStation Blog. He wrote, “Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection’s PC release is a transformative pivot point for Naughty Dog”. The development studio has another PlayStation exclusive lined up for a PC release, namely The Last of Us Part I. Naughty Dog has claimed that the development of PC games will be beneficial for their team “in the long run” but pointed out that the PlayStation 5 will remain as their primary platform.

He also spoke highly of Iron Galaxy, the studio which has helped Naughty Dog bring Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PC. Naughty Dog “deliberately partnered with Iron Galaxy because we saw in the studio not only a tremendous understanding of PC development we could learn from, but also a team that shared a love for our series as if it were their own.”

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection features PC-oriented gameplay mechanics

Since Uncharted has been a game tailor-made for PlayStation consoles, it has always featured gameplay mechanics with PlayStation controls in mind. Naughty Dog reflected upon this and mentioned how they had to “re-evaluate certain game mechanics to fit the new input methods”.

Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection

Gyrling gave the example of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy which features a lock-picking minigame. Players have to use a PS controller’s analog stick and haptic feedback in order to unlock. Since a keyboard and a mouse cannot serve those same functions, the developers had to devise a different mode of mechanics to allow players to engage and interact.

Ultra-wide monitor support added but cutscenes will feature black bars

Not just mechanics, there are various features that are required in PC ports these days. Marvel's Spider-Man was recently released on PC and it arrived with ultra-wide support. Similarly, Sony's Naughty Dog studio has added ultra-wide monitor support for Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PC.

Naughty Dog cited "maintaining the original artistic intent and design" as the reason behind adding black bars to the cinematic cutscenes of both games in the Legacy of Thieves Collection. The studio believes that the decision was important to retain the "emotional experience" of these scenes.
