The next Battlefield game brings back the fan-favorite Portal mode, letting players create custom game modes with weapons and maps from past titles. Learn about Battlefield Labs and what’s coming in 2026.

It looks like the next Battlefield game is shaping up to be a wild ride, and guess what? The much-loved Battlefield Portal mode is making a comeback! If you’re a fan of mixing and matching weapons, vehicles, and mechanics from across the franchise, this is some seriously good news.

What’s Going On with the New Battlefield?

EA Games and developers DICE & Criterion are working on the next major Battlefield title, though they’re keeping the details hush-hush for now. We don’t even know the official name yet! What we do know is that it’s still in the early pre-alpha phase, meaning we probably won’t be playing it until at least 2026.

Battlefield Portal is Back!

The best part of the Battlefield Labs announcement? Confirmation that Battlefield Portal is returning! YouTuber Flakfire spotted the reveal and shared the news, saying it was a surprise to get confirmation so early in development.

For those who missed it in Battlefield 2042, Portal lets players create their own custom game modes using weapons, maps, and mechanics from past Battlefield games. Want to pit World War II soldiers against futuristic warriors? Go for it. Want to recreate classic maps with a twist? You got it. Players have made everything from crazy challenges to full-on Battlefield: Vietnam throwbacks.

Why This Is a Big Deal

Even though Battlefield 2042 had a rocky start, Portal was hands-down one of the best things about it. Many players have strong nostalgia for older Battlefield games, and Portal gave them a way to relive those experiences in fresh, creative ways.

With Portal confirmed for the next Battlefield, EA and DICE have a golden opportunity to expand on what made it great while introducing new mechanics, settings, and tech. Fingers crossed they nail it!

When Can We Play?

Since the game is still in pre-alpha, we’ve got a long wait ahead—expect a 2026 release at the earliest. But with Battlefield Labs coming, we might get sneak peeks of what’s to come sooner than expected.

In the meantime, what do you want to see in the next Battlefield? More classic maps? Wild new mechanics? Let’s hope EA delivers the Battlefield experience we’ve all been waiting for!
