Epic Games Lawsuits Two Fortnite Cheaters, Issues Lifetime Bans and Public Apology Orders

Epic Games sues two Fortnite players for selling cheats and launching DDoS attacks. Lifetime bans and forced apology videos aim to stop cheaters for good.

Epic Games is not playing around when it comes to cheaters in Fortnite. In a move that continues its tough-as-nails stance against rule-breakers, Epic has taken legal action against two players for serious violations which include selling cheats and launching DDoS attacks against streamers. This isn’t just another slap on the wrist. These players are now facing lifetime bans from Fortnite and lawsuits. Oh, and they’ve been asked to record public apology videos too.

Why Epic Is Taking Cheating So Seriously

This isn’t the first time Epic has gone full-court press on cheaters. In the past, the company has hit players with:

  • Mandatory public apologies

And they’re not stopping anytime soon.

According to a July 14 post from the Epic Games Newsroom, one of the accused players was distributing cheats for Fortnite, while the other was launching Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against streamers during live matches which essentially disrupted someone else's game to gain an unfair edge. Both of them are now facing legal consequences and are banned for life.

The Apology Era: Forced to Face the Fans

In a move that feels straight out of reality TV, both cheaters have also been ordered to make apology videos. While that might sound a little extreme, it’s actually part of Epic’s larger plan to humiliate and deter bad actors.

It’s not just about punishing individuals but it’s about sending a message to the entire Fortnite community as well as the cheating industry that Epic means business. After all, Fortnite is still a competitive game played by millions, including pros, streamers, and casual fans who just want a fair shot at a Victory Royale.

But... Are These Tactics Working?

Surprisingly, yes.

A 2024 study on anti-cheat systems found that Fortnite is one of the better games out there when it comes to keeping cheaters in check. It’s not flawless, of course nothing is, but legal action, bans, and updated security seem to be doing more good than harm.

In addition to these efforts, Epic recently made a gameplay adjustment to reduce the number of bots in battle royale matches. The number of bots per match has dropped from 75 to 65, which increases the number of human opponents and raises the overall skill ceiling. It’s a clear sign Epic is prioritizing a more challenging, player-driven experience.

Why This Matters

The cheating issue isn’t just some annoying side problem. It’s an industry-wide threat with an entire underground economy built around hacks, mods, and exploits. When developers ignore it, real players suffer and they leave. That’s not something a company like Epic Games can afford, especially with Fortnite still being a major force in gaming years after its launch.

By aggressively targeting cheaters in court, Epic is saying:

“You’re not just breaking game rules BUT you’re breaking actual laws.”

It’s a bold strategy, and while it may not scare every would be cheater, it definitely raises the stakes for anyone thinking of trying their luck.
