Learn about Fortnite's new Sleep Mode feature arriving in Chapter 5, Season 4 with update 31.30. Customize inactivity timers, pause matchmaking, and more. Find out how to adjust Sleep Mode settings and manage your AFK time.
Fortnite is known for constantly evolving, and with the Chapter 5, Season 4 update, a brand-new feature is on the horizon—Sleep Mode! Coming with the 31.30 update, this feature will help players manage their activity when they’re away from the game.
Let’s break down exactly what Sleep Mode is and how it works!
What is Sleep Mode in Fortnite?
A useful feature called Sleep Mode is meant to kick in after a certain period of inactivity on the part of the player. This function will activate by default after 15 minutes of inactivity, alerting your friends or squad that you've taken a break from your keyboard. The settings, which we'll go over below, let you customize the inactivity timer to fit your needs.
When Sleep Mode is activated:
- Voice Chat is paused.
- Matchmaking is canceled.
This way, you won’t accidentally join a match while you’re AFK (away from keyboard). It's a great tool for avoiding those awkward moments when your team wonders where you disappeared to!
How to Adjust Sleep Mode Settings
Epic Games has shared the steps on how to adjust Sleep Mode settings before its release:
- Open Settings from the Fortnite main menu.
- Navigate to the Game tab.
- Find the Sleep Mode & Energy Saving section and adjust the timer to your preference.
This gives players the freedom to change when Sleep Mode kicks in, depending on how long they anticipate being inactive.

Can You Turn Sleep Mode Off?
There isn't a specific option offered by Epic to turn it completely off. Nevertheless, if you intend to take a short break but still want to be in the queue or actively playing the game, you could be able to stretch the timer to its maximum value thanks to the adjustable feature.
Once Sleep Mode is officially added to Fortnite, we’ll update this guide with more information on how it functions and whether a full disable option becomes available. Stay tuned for more details as 31.30 rolls out!
